This position supervises the Laboratory Technicians to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the Laboratory at the Louisiana Integrated PolyEthylene JV LLC site. The supervisor and shift team provide efficient and cost-effective routine and non-routine analytical and physical testing on products produced and/or samples generated at this site. Laboratory Supervisors are also accountable for ensuring working safely, independently, and efficiently while always seeking to implement methods which reduce costs, improve quality, and reduce the potential for injury. The supervisor is accountable for personal safety, the safety of co-workers, promoting a safe work environment, and the oversight of all work activities in compliance with federal and state environmental regulations.
A Day in the Life
- Ensure accurate, timely completion of analytical testing and verify results meet specifications and quality standards.
- Direct Lab Technicians on additional testing to evaluate and resolve out‑of‑spec batches and support timely customer shipments.
- Maintain working knowledge of lab processes, equipment calibration, certification systems, adverse-weather planning, emergency response and supply management to support operations.
- Communicate with Operations, Logistics, Technical, HSE, and Laboratory teams to mitigate risks and support production and quality goals.
- Make after‑hours/weekend decisions on out‑of‑spec results, coordinate product disposition, and escalate shipments as needed.
- Investigate incidents, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions using HOP principles.
- Demonstrate strong operational leadership by maintaining a deep understanding of finished‑product shipping and material‑handling operations, as well as the laboratory’s support role for Operations.
- Develop and manage team performance, provide coaching, feedback, recognition, and ensure appropriate training and qualifications compliance.
- Maintain high safety and environmental standards, ensuring adherence to HSE policies, Goal Zero expectations, and regulatory requirements.
- Interfaces with Operations to coordinate analytical workload and facilitate the transfer of data on shift.
- Oversee sample collection (routine, customer qualification, and third‑party) and ensure proper handling and documentation.
- Supervise in a bias‑free, non‑discriminatory manner in all areas of employment including hiring, promotions, performance improvement, and other employee‑related decisions and practices.
- Demonstrate effective communication with technicians and ensure clear, consistent communication between shifts, day staff, and unit management.
- Manage shipment documentation, including Certificates of Analysis (CoAs), load reports, tracking systems, and communication with Logistics.
- Handle off‑spec waivers, work notifications, permits, and daily communication through shift reports (e.g., CNotes).
- Ensure environmental compliance (sampling, chain of custody) and proper handling of laboratory waste and recycling.
- Manage lab inventory, warehouse receipts, consumables, and cylinder gases.
- Support poly lab operations, including retain samples, film roll‑off processes, and coordination with external vendors.
- Address employee concerns, partner with HR when needed, and ensure fair, consistent application of policies.
- Ensures that issues are reported, investigated and resolved in a timely manner and corrective action is taken where appropriate.
You Bring This Value
- Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalency.
- Must have one of the following:
- A Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 6 years’ laboratory experience
- An Associates degree with a minimum of 8 years’ laboratory experience
- A minimum of 10 years’ laboratory experience
- Working knowledge of laboratory techniques/instrumentation.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, as well as exceptional interpersonal skills for effective interfacing across all departments within LyondellBasell.
- Leadership, coaching and supervision skills are required.
- The position requires good knowledge of Company policies, Laboratory operating procedures, basic maintenance procedures, health, safety and environmental regulations and employee policies and practices.
- The individual should be organized, collaborative, and capable of developing and leading a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with chromatography, physical property testing, and wet methods.
- Plant Operations familiarity
- Supervision experience
