Basic Function

The Electrical Specialist is part of the Maintenance Department at the Louisiana Integrated Polyethylene JV in Westlake, LA. This position will work with Maintenance Technicians in their daily activities by ensuring they have the necessary field technical support. The Electrical Specialist will be responsible for planning and executing large scale energy isolation procedures, coordinating with craft and specialty contractors for electrical testing and inspection, and supporting in house electrical maintenance personnel with advanced troubleshooting of complex electrical control strategies. In addition, this specialist will provide technical support for Operations, Electrical Engineers, Maintenance, HSE, Capital Projects and Turnaround to achieve our site strategy.

Roles & Responsibilities

General:

  • Tracks Bad Actors and develops mitigation plans.
  • Reviews area notifications for technical validation.
  • Works with the Electrical Maintenance and Reliability team to manage PMs (i.e., plant power distribution PM items) and procedure creation (i.e., motor repair, power distribution switching procedures) for existing and new electrical systems.
  • Reviews completed PMs for accuracy and completion, and verifies no immediate further action is required.
  • Ability to perform testing of various types of electrical distribution equipment such as transformers, breakers, MCCs, switchgear, etc.
  • Provides data & feedback to Electrical Engineers to help drive reliability improvements to site's electrical infrastructure.
  • Participates in investigation teams as required.
  • Utilize blueprints, hand tools, and test equipment to troubleshoot and maintain electrical equipment such as relays, transformers, CTs, PTs, breakers, starters, VFDs, and associated communication and power management equipment.
  • Participates in unit PHAs as required.
  • Interfaces and acts as technical resource for Unit Engineers, Operations, and HSE on critical systems.
  • Works with Turnaround and Capital Project organizations to develop scope, participates in detailed design, and testing and execution phases of projects.
  • Secures electronic copies of all programs on electrical test equipment, variable speed drives, PMS system, and protection relays in the plant.  Stores these programs on the network, and creates a management program to ensure that the stored programs stay current.
  • Develops strategies to ensure the proper electrical equipment is upgraded as necessary to meet changing technological needs.
  • Acts as a resource for crafts on complex jobs and provides required documents during and after job completions.
  • Provides instruction during technician training sessions as applicable.
  • Assists Electrical Reliability with BOM's for electrical equipment in SAP.
  • Shepherds "critical" motors through the repair process at outside shops.
  • Performs random QA/QC audits on motor repair shops.

Area of Expertise, Requirements:

  • Ability to interact with different plant groups in multiple disciplines.  
  • Demonstrates an advanced knowledge of plant operations and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve the reliability of the plant electrical systems.
  • Possesses strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to create, read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, manufacturer’s literature, diagrams, or schematics.
  • Advanced knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
  • Advanced knowledge of NFPA-70E requirements pertaining to electrical safety.
  • Fully understands the operation and testing of high voltage equipment and the interpretation of test results.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills necessary to maintain and troubleshoot electrical systems from 230KV to 125VDC.

Min. Qualifications

High School Diploma (or GED equivalent):

  • Completion of relevant recognized program (such as NETA Electrical Level 2, NCCER, Associates Degree in Electrical, etc.)
  • Minimum of 7 years of Relay Protection Scheme/ Electrical Testing/Troubleshooting experience

Languages: English, additional language preferred
