Basic Function

As a member of the HSE team, this position will provide safety engineering, occupational health, industrial hygiene and emergency response leadership and expertise to the Lake Charles Polymers Site through the development and implementation of HSE programs.  Will develop strategies for managing complex and/or sensitive HSE issues related to specific plant operations, corporate and business initiatives for compliance, and responsible HSE management areas applicable to the chemicals industry. Instrumental in driving a GoalZERO culture through active employee engagement, education and support in the identification and effective resolution of safety and industrial hygiene related issues.

Roles & Responsibilities

•    Partners with other safety professionals to leverage learnings and to develop and implement best practice solutions to safety, health and emergency response regulatory matters and other issues.
•    Builds and maintains effective relationships with site functional groups (i.e. Operations, Maintenance, Technical, etc..) to successfully drive HSE initiatives necessary to comply with regulatory and/or corporate requirements.  Ensures HSE programs are effectively communicated and understood and are designed so that compliance is achievable and supportive of the site business objectives. Establishes metrics, monitor performance and progress.
•    Is responsive to the needs and requests of the client base and is an active presence in the operating units.  
•    Own, deliver and advance GoalZERO.   Demonstrate an untiring effort in finding new and better ways to reach our safety and health goals and achieve World Class Performance.
•    Evaluates, refines when needed, and provides leadership to the site's safety, emergency response and other IH programs.
•    Ensures compliance with company HSE standards. Interprets and provides guidance related to health and safety policies, procedures and requirements. Conducts regular audits of safety policies and procedures with necessary follow-up to ensure compliance and advise plant leadership of findings. Ensures policies and procedures are easy to understand and to follow.
•    Develops and delivers training to the site on HSE policies, procedures, work practices and their supporting programs. Evaluate existing training programs and assess for effectiveness.
•    Interacts with agency representatives, as appropriate, on interpretation and applicability of a regulation or requirement in a manner that minimizes negative impacts.
•    Evaluates, coaches and resolves questions related to planning for and executing field work activities.  Perform scope reviews and field evaluations on multifaceted complex jobs to determine appropriate industrial hygiene monitoring, protection levels and safe work practices
•    Leads and participates on incident investigation teams and both regulatory and internal audit teams as assigned.
•    Develops a basic knowledge of the operating units and site processes to which the regulations and requirements must be applied and be able to identify opportunities for improvement
•    Provide leadership and support to in-house contractor emergency response team.
•    Works with the HSE Manager in budget preparation by providing project/cost details and justifications.
•    Participates in Trade Associations (i.e. ASSE, NASP, VPPPA) in assigned field.

Min. Qualifications

•    BS or MS in Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene or related technical discipline
•    Eight to 10 years of professional experience, with at least two years in a manufacturing environment preferred. 
•    Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist and/or other professional HSE certifications preferred.
•    Excellent communication, presentation, systemic thinking and interpersonal skills to help the HSE department, operations, and other functional groups implement those process changes or procedures necessary to comply with the regulations and requirements.
•    Regulatory and technical knowledge.  Must possess a strong knowledge of Safety, Health and Emergency Response.
•    Effective interpersonal skills with ability to communicate across multiple levels within the site and in different group settings.
•    Strong facilitation and conflict resolution skills.
•    Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously with competing priorities.
•    Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make effective decisions under pressure.
•    Ability to represent company with regulatory agencies in a professional and respectful manner.
•    Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing business priorities and customer needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Eight to 10 years of professional experience, with at least two years in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist and/or other professional HSE certifications preferred.
