Corporate Stationary Equipment Engineer (m/f/d)

In this position you will be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for piping and pressurized process equipment supporting LyondellBasell’s petrochemical and refining facilities globally with an emphasis on European assets. You will provide high level expertise and collaborate with sites to support turnarounds, determining fitness for service of equipment, develop repair strategies, and purchase specifications for new equipment. You must have excellent technical leadership and judgment to assess complex issues and work with a members of a diverse multicultural organization across operational sites, functional areas, and organizational levels to develop and communicate executable solutions, drive improvements, and be a champion for Operational Excellence across the enterprise.


In addition you will be a leader in the company driving process safety and owning one or more SME areas within stationary equipment in which you will develop strategies to drive improvement, own and author standards, preferred practices and guidelines and provide training across the company. You may also be tasked with leading one or more companywide improvement programs, developing and implementing SME related initiatives across, participating in and guiding incident investigations, performing site audits in support of improvement efforts, and participating in stationary equipment purchasing initiatives.


Responsibilities & Accountabilities


  • Function as a corporate Subject Matter Expert in stationary equipment.
  • Provide technical leadership to manufacturing sites and projects for equipment design, maintenance, inspection, and turnarounds.
  • Lead one or more continuous improvement programs or initiatives.
  • Effectively interface across the company building consensus, and working well with people in diverse, multi-culture teams to gain support for organizational goals and facilitate execution to assure success.
  • Author, revise, maintain, and implement standards, guidelines, preferred practices, and specifications related to stationary equipment.
  • Provide stationary equipment SME support in the implementation of Turnaround Excellence Protocols and during execution of major turnarounds across Europe on a rotational basis.
  • Function as the focal point for the Equipment Deficiency Risk Management Work Process in EU and execute basic fitness for service assessments and related analytical calculations to support sites as needed.
  • Mentor and train the organization in SME expertise areas to develop the organization and drive improvements.
  • Champion Process Safety, Occupational Safety, and Operational Excellence culture.
  • Function with minimal guidance and successfully manage priorities across multiple operating sites and functional areas.
  • Proactively develop strategic efforts and goals related to areas of expertise to drive improvement in the company.
  • Provide stationary equipment SME support for incident investigations and RCFA, participate in Operational Excellence Audits, and support stationary equipment related corporate purchasing initiatives across EU as needed.
  • Utilize expertise in stationary equipment and expertise focus areas (e.g. Heat Exchangers, Safety Relief Valves, Welding, Inspection, Repair, etc.) to assist sites with reactive and proactive solutions to stationary equipment issues, drive corporate and business initiatives, and improve site reliability and safety.





  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working as a mechanical engineer focused on stationary equipment in the refining, petrochemical, or chemical process industries. Experience in inspection, reliability, maintenance, fitness for service, and repair of stationary equipment is essential.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken). Fluency in French, German, Italian, and/or Dutch is a plus.




  • Exceptional analytical skills for analyzing data, problem solving, and developing practical solutions to complex problems.
  • Strong knowledge of pressure equipment and application of European and International practices and standards such as ASME, EN, API, and other EU codes as they apply to design, analysis, procurement, re-rating, inspection, maintenance, repair, and alteration of pressure equipment.
  • Experienced supporting execution of a major plant turnaround.
  • Plant experience in a variety of equipment life cycle issues including specification, design, inspection, repair, and evaluating equipment fitness for service.
  • Demonstrated experience in authoring technical reports, standards, specifications, procedures and other technical documents.
  • Ability to execute basic fitness for service assessments for pressure equipment and familiarity with at least one computer program for pressure equipment design and assessment.
  • Specialization in one or more of the following subjects is a plus: Fitness for Service, hot taps and working on live equipment, valves (selection, design, and repair), pipe stress analysis, pressure equipment inspection (methods, systems, and codes), NDT (non-destructive testing), welding, or equipment repair.
  • Able to travel up to 20%; mostly within Europe, including direct TA support on a yearly basis.
