Basic Function

The Instrument and Electrical Engineer at LyondellBasell’s high density polyethylene (HDPE) chemical manufacturing site located in Victoria, Texas has the responsibility to maintain, support and improve the plant instrumentation. The I&E engineer is experienced and knowledgeable in the design and maintenance of instrumentation, control systems, and low voltage electrical systems. 

The position interacts with other technical groups onsite (process engineering, capital projects, operations, and maintenance groups), corporate technical networks and peers, and vendors/suppliers as needed to resolve problems and improve plant safety and reliability performance.  This is a direct hire position with competitive base salary, bonus, 401K matching, generous benefits package, pension plan, and employee discounts.          

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Monitor equipment performance and make improvement recommendations
  • Apply data analysis techniques to develop engineering solution and manage risk to achieve organizational strategic objectives in the areas of safety, environmental, capacity, quality, cost, and regulatory compliance issues
  • Consult with peers at the site and across the company
  • Provide technical support/expertise within your discipline in the design and installation stages of projects for new assets and modification of existing assets to minimize life cycle cost and maximize asset availability
  • Participate in the development of criteria for, and the evaluation of, equipment and technical service providers
  • Lead and participate in incident investigation to determine root causes of incidents related to control/safety systems, electrical systems and instrumentation systems
  • Provide discipline support for plant and project PHA's, including completion of applicable action items
  • Systematically define, design, develop, monitor, and refine an asset maintenance plan that includes:
    • Value-added preventive maintenance tasks
    • Effective utilization of predictive condition monitoring and other non-destructive testing methodologies to proactively identify potential reliability issues
  • Apply value analysis to repair/replace/redesign decisions
  • Provide goal/project support as lead/project engineer for corporate technical groups in supporting initiatives as necessary, as the "Core Member" or "Extended Member" representative, for groups within their discipline 
  • Provide technical support for the site instrumentation systems, electrical equipment, and technicians as it relates to installing, maintaining, and repairing system components
  • Provide technical support to the maintenance supervisor and site planner in scoping work as well as specifying equipment for the instrumentation/electrical systems and equipment
  • Serve as system administrator and site champion for the Asset Management System for site instrumentation
  • Update site SKM power study, arc flash analysis and related procedures

Min. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in instrumentation and electrical systems design, installation, and maintenance in the refining, petrochemical, chemical process or power generation industries
  • Ability to manage multiple/changing priorities
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing with internal and external clients
  • Strong commitment to safety, a high level of personal integrity, and dedication to conducting business in an ethical manner
  • The successful candidate must exhibit an understanding of business drivers, management of change requirements, reliability processes, and maintenance workflow
  • The individual must have or develop basic proficiency in the following areas:
    • Interpretation and application of industry codes and standards (i.e., IEEE, ISA, NFPA, NEC)
    • Process instrumentation and control valves
    • Motors, motor controls and drives
    • Analyzers and sample systems
    • PLC maintenance, troubleshooting and programming
    • Distributed control systems
    • Project management
    • Reliability engineering concepts
    • Reliability data analysis techniques
    • Predictive and preventive maintenance concepts
    • Basic knowledge of power distribution systems
    • Basic knowledge of safety instrumented systems (SIS) design and logic
    • Ability to apply computer software tools (SAP, MS Office, Meridium, CAD)
  • Working knowledge of Process Control Network, DCS, SIS, PLC's, Data Acquisition and Analysis Systems, Advanced and Regulatory Control Applications, Electrical Systems and Components and Instrument Systems and Components.  Apply new technology where appropriate to improve performance of the facility, is a plus
  • Eventually serve as system administrator for the Process Control Network and other Control Systems at the site and site SIS subject matter expert
  • Capital and small plant project management experience
