Category Manager

Basic Function

  • Develops, deploys and manages the Sourcing Strategies required to support company operations across multiple Sites within Technical Materials and Services category
  • Creates strategies that integrate internal technical requirement and utilizes multiple strateguc levers to optimize value including challenging the technical status quo
  • Promotes excellent working relationships with Engineering/Manufacturing/Operations/Site and Capital  Procurement organizations in the development and execution of sourcing strategies and digitization projects
  • May involve negotiating multi-year/multi-million-dollar expenditures and putting in place regional and global agreements
  • Utilizes comprehensive and systematic market analysis for the materials / services procured to drive lowest total cost of ownership and maximum value to the company
  • Manages effective internal stakeholders engagements and supplier relationships to the senior levels
  • This position will coordinate with global Procurement colleagues for their global synergy projects and deliver value to the company. 
  • This position will develop the Best Cost Country Sourcing / Low Cost Country Sourcing strategies and be accountable for the cost savings related to the assigned categories. 
  • This position will maintain regular communication with suppliers and will deliver market intelligence to Procurement and the APS business to maintain LYB’s competitive position.
  • On an as-need basis, this position will assist Sourcing specialists to execute procurement strategy.
  • This position requires interaction with various functional groups throughout the APAC region including the businesses, Finance, Supply Chain and Manufacturing. This interaction will provide excellent exposure to various levels within multiple departments.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Technical materials commodity would typically include segments items like control valves, maintenance valves, compressors, vessels and heat exchangers, furnaces, instrumentation, refrigeration, power distribution, MROs, pipings, fittings, extruders, pelletizers, motors, gear box, fans, blowers, pumps, packing and filling equipments, transformers, switchgears, lab equipments, etc
  • Technical services commodity would include segments like maintenance services (civil, engineering), Inspection, Safety, HSE, Rentals, Industrial cleaning, Turn arounds, outages, engineering, construction, scaffolding, insulation, painting, waste management, 
  • Collaborate with global and regional Procurement colleagues to develop and execute the strategy for the assigned categories.
  • Own and sustain the development and execution of the category strategy through collaboration with business stakeholders and global / regional Procurement colleagues.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the business requirements, value chain, total costs, risks and opportunities in order to deliver value to the company.
  • Bring knowledge of suppliers and market expertise to the stakeholder, including identification and development of innovation.
  • Flawlessly execute the 7-step strategic sourcing process when sourcing all materials in compliance the LYB’s Delegation of Authority (DOA).
  • Challenge sourcing activities, processes and existing practices to drive value.
  • Manage tendering and negotiations and formalize contracts when appropriate.
  • Be accountable for value creation aligned with annual targets.
  • Take responsibility for supplier management, implementing supplier business reviews and other means of driving supplier performance in sustainable, systematic ways.
  • Implements measurement systems that clearly indicate the performance level of sourcing strategy and supplier effectiveness
  • Maintain focus on added value, lowest total “life cycle” cost, cost savings and cost avoidance 
  • Join supplier site audits with other functions when appropriate.
  • Ensure suppliers have the capacity, financial stability, quality & technical capabilities to meet business requirements and establish supplier development / risk mitigation plans as appropriate.
  • Work with business stakeholders for the development and deployment of appropriate supplier performance targets and KPIs. 
  • Promote excellent working relationship with internal and external stakeholders
  • Lead or support improvement projects within Procurement and within other LYB departments.
  • Ensure compliance and process standardization / improvements in line with global policies
  • Ensure that business delivers, departmental goals and measures are aligned

Min. Qualifications


  • University degree, mechanical engineering background is preferred


Work Experience: 

  • At least 8 years of strategic sourcing and procurement experience in the petrochemical or plastics compounding industry
  • At least 5 years in a regional role (across APAC region would be preferred)
  • Combined experience in commercial, technical, manufacturing, engineering and/or project management roles is a plus.
  • Techno-commercial knowledge and experience in managing commodities / segments mentioned above
  • Good knowledge of global / regional supplier base and market intelligence pertaining to above categories
  • Experience in establishing commodity/segment strategies and management preferred
  • Experience in implementing digital procurement solutions  as value enabler in a commercial setting preferred
