Business Development and Project Manager

Basic Function

This position leads strategic efforts within Global and Asia I&D Management to formulate and ultimately implement strategy for growing the I&D position in Asia in medium to long term. The incumbent will develop a thorough understanding of propylene oxide (PO), derivatives and co-products industry globally and with a focus in Asia, in investigating and formulating avenues for growth.    Position will also be involved in management and strategic plans of current and future joint venture (JV) activities.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the PO and related polyurethane industry globally, with a focus on Asia.  This include technologies, demand drivers, competitive landscape,  and economics.  Help to lead in formation of global and Asia I&D Management strategy formulation to grow the I&D position in Asia, with impact on long-term business direction.
  • Key member of I&D global team managing existing and future JV operations.  This includes all aspects of operation including SHE, reliability, cost control, logistics operations, and marketing.  Work to resolve issues with partners and raise issues internally within LYB as required.
  • Identify, evaluate, engage, and form relationships with current and potential parties for implementation of the I&D global growth strategy and plan. Justify and recommend parties and opportunities to I&D senior management as well as the global SP&T organization.
  • Recommend specific opportunities to Management for approval to pursue
  • Position represents the global I&D organization in working with the SP&T in project development and venture establishment for opportunities. This may include compilation of feasibility study, environmental impact assessment study, negotiation and conclusion of MOU, JV Contract and associated agreements.    Could also include project proposal for approval by relevant government authorities in case of Wholly-owned venture.    
  • Participate and add value in the project management of the venture during its EPC, commissioning and commercial start-up.
  • Support, assist and coordinate with JV parties, relevant LYB functions, government authorities during the initial establishment phase of the venture company until its successful commercial starts up.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education:

Bachelor degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry related field and in-depth knowledge on China.  MBA preferred.

  • Work Experience:

Twenty years or more of chemical industry experience in Asia, including significant experience with China industry.  Experience with strategy development and execution as well as with project management.  Ideal candidate has experience and knowledge in a range of disciplines including managing a team, management of JV’s, sales, marketing, planning, business development, engineering and manufacturing. 

  • Languages:

Fluent in written and spoken English and Mandarin.


China or Hong Kong.

Functional Compentencies/ Skills

The ideal candidate will have all or most of the followings:

  • Business development and project management experience in chemical industries in Asia particularly in China, strong project execution capability and solid track record of negotiation experience in implementing JV, wholly-owned, and/or M&A activities of multinational chemical companies. 
  • Insight of chemical industry, its upstream feedstock supplies and issues, its downstream endues application and trends; strategic thinking and business acumen.
  • Strong conceptual ability and analytical skills, and demonstrated ability to complete complex project assignment and perform complex problem solving.
  • Strong planning, coordinating and leadership skills to anticipate business needs and lead and influence others in assignments which involve other business and functional units.
  • Proficient in business & financial analysis, financial modelling and project evaluation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of multiple business segments, including markets, commercial contract structure, raw materials, manufacturing, and supply chain.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration and influencing others in a global, multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment to deliver complex concepts, strong influencing power on people.
