Asia Communications Advisor

Basic Function

The Communications Advisor, Asia will be a member of the Public Affairs team. This individual is responsible for working closely with business and functional clients to develop and implement marketing and employee communications strategies and programs using best-in-class methods. The successful candidate will be responsible for:
•    working closely with business unit stakeholders to develop and implement marketing communications strategies and programs. Will be responsible for implementing sales support materials, messaging, literature, advertisements, newsletters, press releases, media plans and content for trade shows, as well as other marketing communications tactics for the Asia region.

•    developing and administering employee and digital communication strategies using the latest methods with repeatable and measurable processes which are aligned with achieving the company’s business goals.

Candidates should have expert ability to use creative and strategic thought to solve business problems utilizing various communications strategies to ultimately advance the implementation of all aspects of corporate communications for the region. 

In this position, the successful candidate will have the opportunity over time to support various teams within Corporate Communications including Executive Communication, External Relations, Brand Marketing, and Corporate Philanthropy. 

This position reports to the Rotterdam-based Manager, External Affairs EAI, will be part of the Public Affairs department and will be located in Shanghai, China. This individual will work very closely with the Advisor, Public Affairs Asia including providing back-up support when needed. Additionally, this individual will have dotted line reporting responsibilities to the Manager, Brand & Marketing Communications.
 

Roles & Responsibilities

•    Serve as Asia regional representative for Marketing Communications, Employee/Digital Communications and External Affairs support. This position will have internal, marketing and external communications responsibilities.
•    Responsible for traveling to Asia locations/sites and building relationships with Marketing business leads, site leadership and employees to facilitate open dialogue about marketing and trade events that can advance the LyondellBasell brand and its product offerings in the market place.
•    Understand the Asia petrochemical market and acquire data and customer research to inform plans and decisions.
•    Align with entire Public Affairs team on external strategies and activities, including the support of LYB’s WeChat social media platform.
•    Collaborate with the Corporate Communications team in both content and visual storytelling for LyondellBasell through a broad array of communication assets: video, print, digital, social media, brochures, newsletters, memos, eCards, intranet content, web content, posters, signage, collateral, promotional campaigns, special projects, general internal and external communications in region.
•    Support communications to internal and external stakeholders  in Asia and Asia-Pacific locations, and attend group and client meetings when requested. 
•    Write a variety of materials, including brochures, advertisements, trade media press releases, media responses, fact sheets, feature stories and other materials as needed.
•    Establish and maintain media contacts, especially with trade publications. 
•    Serve as APS Asia and Asia-Pacific Manufacturing focal point and media spokesperson as part of the LyondellBasell response team to address media and community inquiries during local emergency events. Will also serve as a back-up for incident or crisis events for Asia and Asia-Pacific.
•    Understand the vision of the Business Marketing team and client expectations, show ability to build ideas and recognize potential issues with concepts prior to execution to construct and further compelling programs.
•    Act as a project manager, executing campaigns and projects, including executing Chinaplas activities, with a degree of skill and professionalism.
•    Develop compelling content for marketing and employee communications campaigns.
•    Possess initiative to think several steps ahead in communications process and anticipate needs of clients and management.
•    With approval of the Manager, Brand & Marketing Communications and Manager, External Affairs EAI, present and sell ideas to business units and senior management.
•    Display ability to understand and implement metrics systems and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to benchmark progress and success of communication initiatives.
•    Collaborate with in-house design team to execute creative concepts in alignment with overarching corporate messaging and brand standards.
•    Consult with appropriate Public Affairs Management on strategic direction of all communications and offer strategic insight and creative solutions to problems. Approvals for all communications must be routed through these parties prior to distribution.
•    Perform any additional duties as directed or required.

Min. Qualifications

•    Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Public Relations, Communications, Business, Marketing or related field
•    4+ years of relevant experience required in a marketing or corporate communications position
•    Fluent in English, Chinese (Mandarin)
•    Possess very strong verbal and writing skills, including the ability to communicate and interact effectively at all levels of the organization 
•    Ability to work independently and as a member of a team to deliver efficiently under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
•    Prior experience in social media

Preferred Qualifications

•    6+ years of relevant experience in marketing or corporate communications
•    Experience working for or supporting a global company in petrochemical, oil/gas industry or energy sector
•    Proficiency in Cantonese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Hindi, Taiwanese or Indonesian is desirable
•    Prior agency experience is desirable
•    Prior experience in social media and implementation of best practices 
•    Experience writing in AP style
