Basic Function



The global tax department  at LyondellBasell is a collection of over 70 individuals located in different countries working diligently to comply with our Company’s regulatory/ compliance requirements and to enhance shareholder value. Within the global tax department we have direct tax counsel and tax reporting teams that  are responsible for the Company’s global direct tax matters including planning, compliance, audit defense and tax accounting processes.. In the Rotterdam office the Tax Accounting and Reporting team consists of five team members (including this role) and two Tax Counsel team members.  There are also direct tax team members in London (UK), Wesseling (Germany), Ferrara (Italy) and Berre (France) with whom you will interact as well as VAT team members in Rotterdam and other locations. 


We are looking for a Tax Supervisor to be part of the Global Tax Reporting team reporting to the Manager Tax Accounting Non US located in Rotterdam.  As part of the Global Tax Reporting team this position will be part of a team of Tax professionals who are responsible for Non US and global tax reporting (US GAAP and IFRS), income tax compliance for the BENELUX region, and to ensure that sophisticated and well governed tax processes are embedded in the organization. However this role will have responsibilities beyond Global Tax Reporting.  It is expected that this role will support other direct tax teams in Rotterdam and other European locations as needed with respect to tax audits, tax planning, tax process efficiencies, tax risk mitigation, acquisitions and divestitures and similar type projects.  For these activities the role will report into members of the European Tax Counsel team.   Initially, until acclimated to our processes and structure, this role will focus on tax reporting and compliance but over time the role will take on other projects and  responsibilities as noted hereafter. Once fully integrated we expect the time devoted to tax reporting and compliance activities to be approximately 60% of this role’s time, with 40% for special projects for our Tax Counsel team, however this could fluctuate over the course of the year.


Efficient management of our responsibilities both process wise and through cost effective automation is a key focus for every member of the team.  

To support our function, we have a team of tax technology professionals.  This role will play a significant role in developing new approaches to data manipulation, streamlined processes and smarter ways of working within the European region, closely coordinating with the Tax Technology team.

Job specification:


The ideal candidate will be a qualified tax professional who has previously gained experience in and knowledge of a similarly structured global organization (e.g. BIG 4 and/ or Industry). Working within a team in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the role is a part of a much larger global department and the candidate will be required to interact and liaise with colleagues around the world.

The candidate will be comfortable working on their own initiative to achieve objectives and deadlines relevant to the role requirements and business needs in a timely and accurate manner.

Roles & Responsibilities



  • Assist with preparation and review of year-end tax provision schedules for the Non-US region under the principles of IAS 12 and ASC 740, including, but not limited to: 
    • Assist in preparation and review of current and deferred tax calculation for the Non-US region;
    • Preparation of required footnotes and disclosures;
    • Assist with managing the workflows from these jurisdictions and liaise with local controllers about their input for the quarterly provision process. Make sure their work is performed in a timely, accurate and efficient way;
    • Preparation and/ or review of tax calculations for the BENELUX operations
  • Assist in preparation and/ or reviewing quarterly International FIN 18 and annual tax accounting calculations for Non-US jurisdictions, including effective tax rate analysis, APB 23 analysis, accounting for tax exposures and valuation allowance analysis
  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly tax account roll forwards and reconciliation schedules like deferred balance roll forwards and tax effects in OCI/ equity
  • Assist in preparation of consolidated reports like monthly cash tax and ETR forecasting, FX (tax) exposure reports, etc for applicable jurisdictions
  • Prepare and lead the process for the preparation of clear and concise technical memorandum supporting tax issues and proposing recommendations
  • Takes the initiative in identifying tax and accounting issues and recommending solutions/opportunities for improvement and leads execution of such projects
  • Preparation and/ or review of corporate income tax returns for the BENELUX region 
  • Work with Tax Counsel group on direct tax matters for the European region. For example assist on Legal and Business restructuring and implementation of Tax laws ( i.e. ATAD 1 and 2), assist with tax audits, support other direct tax reporting obligations and ad hoc direct tax projects. We expect that over time this activity will gain in relevance for this role compared to the more reporting related activities
  • Coordinate trainings for tax accounting teams and local finance teams including preparation of materials
  • Lead Special Projects and participate in projects covering the European region to improve the tax reporting, compliance processes and counsel related processes. Projects could relate to the integration of workflow tools (SharePoint), accounting software (SAP), reporting software (HFM),tax provision software (OneSource Tax Provision), DAC6 improvements for reporting, CbCr, deployment of Alteryx for better process governance.
  • Contribute to the (tax) reporting and compliance brand within the LYB Group by developing relationships and embedding a customer focus with other functions/stakeholders.  




Work Experience: 


Typically 5 to 8 years’ work experience ideally within in a large corporate tax environment and/or big 4 accounting firm.


Licenses & Certifications:


Tax Degree (Bachelor or Master) required 




  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, including proficiency in English.
  • Ability to work well with others and under minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment which requires prioritization and ability to multi-task
  • Highly self-motivated; takes initiative; identifies and addresses issues; works efficiently with attention to detail.
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Good understanding of tax accounting concepts under US GAAP and IFRS and ability to research and apply key tax accounting issues
  • Must be able to perform tax (accounting) technical research and write tax (accounting) technical memorandums
  • Proficient Dutch income tax technical and research skills as well as tax compliance skills
  • General knowledge of international income tax principles and the interaction thereof with tax accounting principles 
  • Practical experience with the following (tax) accounting solutions is a plus:
    • SAP and HFM
    • Alteryx
    • OneSource Tax Provision and OneSource Tax Compliance
