This is the role


The Manager, Europe External Affairs leads a full range of Corporate Communications strategies and tactics to ensure integration of company initiatives, including stakeholder engagement, media relations, social media, social investment and communications measurement. He/She will engage with and counsel business leaders and will lead a team of communication professionals at major locations in Europe. This individual will also lead communications strategies for Europe, taking into account cultural and corporate aspects. Additionally, he/she will be the communication lead for major sites in the Netherlands.


This individual must operate with an enterprise view – maintaining a key focus on the external landscape and stakeholder implications which have the potential to impact the company on a European level. This includes identifying and addressing emerging trends/issues and developing mitigation plans to minimize potential reputational impacts. Additionally, this individual will be fully integrated with the Government Relations team, serving as a strategic driver of key stakeholder local and regional initiatives and activities.
He/She will be responsible for ensuring stakeholder relationships are maintained / enhanced and tracked. As a trusted business partner for multiple internal clients, he/she must manage multiple projects and interact professionally and appropriately with Public Affairs counterparts, as well as executives and others inside and outside the Company.


This position will report to the Sr. Manager, EAI External Affairs, Issues & Crisis Management and will be located in the LyondellBasell Rotterdam office.

These are you roles & responsibilities


In this position you will work on the following:


  • Collaborate with the Public Affairs Leadership Team to develop and execute communications plans and campaigns for a wide array of corporate activities
  • Responsible for an extensive stakeholder / client base focused on key company projects and initiatives (e.g. DEI, executive communications, global campaigns)
  • Lead a full range of Corporate Communications strategies and tactics on a regional and company level with an enterprise mindset to ensure company initiatives are aligned, such as stakeholder engagement, media relations, social media, social investment and communications measurement
  • Counsel senior leaders for reputation management and manages stakeholder / client interactions and corporate citizenship activities
  • Develop the strategic direction of the team and lead the development of communications resources and toolkits, including but not limited to communications plans, key message documents, power point presentations, and training materials
  • Construct strategic plans inclusive of situational analysis, strategies, tactics, timeline, budget and evaluation 
  • Develop major corporate initiative message houses (e.g., DEI, Sustainability, Circularity) and associated leadership communications materials
  • Work in partnership with executives and the business to address complex business/operational situations to design a communications strategy to mitigate and/or manage the situation 
  • Lead strategic planning exercises and promotes collaboration and initiative among the team in the development of innovative ideas and concepts 
  • Utilize external analysis to advise senior leaders and on strategic management of campaigns, issues, trends and topics 
  • Act as the communications lead for manufacturing sites in the Netherlands and Belgium
  • Lead and foster an environment for content creation and visual storytelling for LyondellBasell 
  • Drive alignment and information sharing among the Public Affairs team on a regional and company level related to new messaging, resources, upcoming events/activities, etc. 
  • Project owner and/or lead, creating and executing campaigns and projects with skill and professionalism
  • Think several steps ahead and anticipate the needs of clients / stakeholders and senior leaders 
  • Proactively facilitate team and Public Affairs collaboration and functional alignment 
  • Use metrics to drive decision-making in support of continuous improvement
  • Represents the company with the utmost integrity and abides by the LyondellBasell Code of Conduct
  • Act as a company spokesperson and manage media / stakeholder interactions, as well as serve as an incident response communications focal point.
  • Develop, review and edit communications materials and language from other functional areas where applicable (e.g., external, marketing communications, internal) for accuracy and consistency
  • Cultivate and maintain strong client / stakeholder relationships, and develop and execute engagement plans and activities in support of business objectives and preserving / protecting the company’s reputation
  • Counsel and influence senior leaders to increase stakeholder engagement and enhance the company’s reputation 
  • Use impact and influence to secure buy-in/approval on communications approach 
  • Partner with in-house design team to execute creative concepts in alignment with overarching corporate messaging and brand standards
  • Will be responsible for managing and developing direct reports

This is what you bring


  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field 
  • Minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience in a communications-related field with strong writing, verbal and presentation skills. 
  • Prior experience managing an in-person and virtual team.
  • Experience in external communications is a must.
  • Prior corporate communications experience working across functional teams and with business leaders on complex projects.
  • Chemical industry or similar experience is preferred.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and issues management is preferred.
  • Agency experience is a plus. 
  • Knowledge of AP style preferred.
  • Dutch and English are required, additional languages are a plus.

  • Substantial experience supporting site leadership, business executives and/or C-suite
  • Exhibits and applies emotional intelligence and holds team to the same standard
