This is the role
The EU Indirect Tax Lead will lead the EU indirect tax team (Compliance and Advisory) and is responsible for all Regional indirect tax matters, strategy, business advisory, compliance, audits, etc. Related, the role is responsible for developing, maintaining and monitoring the effectiveness of appropriate governance and controls, monitoring legislative changes and trends within the business environment. The EU Indirect Tax Lead takes the lead in tax audits in jurisdictions where no local in-house tax expertise is available; otherwise, VAT audits are managed and concluded in close collaboration with local country tax managers.
It is expected that the EU Indirect Tax Lead will work closely together with other tax and finance functions and is highly connected and involved in partnering with other LYB departments to have oversight on all matters which can have an effect on the LYB’s VAT and other indirect tax matters.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities
- Develop, drive and govern European Indirect Tax strategy (e.g. risk management, cash management, proactive assimilation of business, environmental, tax controversy and legislative changes, etc.);
- Lead the EU indirect tax team and ensure effective business partnering;
- Identify and mitigate indirect tax risks and ensure compliance with local and European legislation and standards. Ensure appropriate governance, process, and controls are in place to monitor risks;
- Monitor in direct tax developments and identify trends within regions, and based on these developments build strategic solutions in coordination with local country tax managers, finance and supply chain teams;
- Team with Tax, Finance and other relevant personnel to provide a consistent approach for indirect Tax;
- Collaboration with the IT organization and the Tax Technology team to ensure that our indirect tax technology landscape is fit for purpose
Indirect Tax controversy; - Consult and collaborate with local country tax managers on VAT audits, controversy, litigation, and dispute resolution; lead for VAT audits on controversy, litigation and dispute resolution, including negotiation and management thereof where no local in-house tax expertise is available;
- Monitor challenges by tax authorities globally, identifying trends, developing risk-based defense strategies and pro-active mitigation options
Business partnering; - Lead VAT workstreams for business-initiated projects, including identification of VAT compliance requirements;
- Provide proactive tax advice to the LYB group entities with technical excellence keeping pragmatism, business models and risk tolerance in mind;
- Create VAT awareness, empowerment, and higher quality data capture/reporting through knowledge sharing including training, development of job aids, development of standard processes and agreement of roles and responsibilities with those responsible for upstream processes;
- Provide strategic perspective, liaising with the various business units regarding process changes as a result of legislative changes, changes in policies or procedures, change in risk profile, etc.

This is what you bring
- Accounting or law degree with minimum of 15 years VAT experience within a law firm, public accounting firm, and corporate tax department for a multinational company handling complex European and cross-border VAT issues and analyses;
- Proven team leadership skills with a focus on the people;
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex and interrelated processes including complex international VAT supply chain experience;
- General VAT compliance and Tax Technology experience;
- Extensive experience in dealing with taxing authorities relative to audits, controversy and litigation matters;
- Ability to communicate complex tax issues and options to senior executives in financial and operational management, allowing for effective decision making;
- Business acumen is a given, chemical industry experience a plus;
- Experience with SAP;
- Fluent in English and Dutch, both verbal and written; other European languages a plus.
