This is the role

As Demurrage Analyst you are responsible for the accurate and timely analyzing, reviewing, issuing, challenging and negotiation towards a final settlement of vessel/ barge demurrage (=overtime) claims coming from suppliers or vessel owners. These claims have to be challenged according our agreed commercial contracts and/or charter party clauses related to our EU shipments initiated by the various business teams (O&P, I&D or Fuels). You will also arrange the required rebill of demurrage costs to the responsible (commercial) counterparts and administer the rebilling process to closure of each involved claims. On a regular basis, you will have to present a detailed statistical overview of all received demurrage claims from a specific period and for a specific business area. You will also discuss recommendations and/or suggestions for contract language improvements to legal and the various EU business partners to decrease the marine demurrage risk for our company.

 

Responsibilities

  • Analyze each demurrage claim accurate and in time by reviewing, issuing, challenging each demurrage claim related to Charter Parties, voyage documents, survey reports and any other clarifying event(s) from agents, terminals, surveyors, charterers within a specific time bar, by defining a justifying compensation settlement amount associated to a specific vessel/barge shipment 
  • Negotiate equitable and timely settlements of rebills for demurrage claims with the responsible (commercial) counterparts
  • Administrate and archive all specific details of each demurrage claim in Excel spreadsheet or any other demurrage tool including the details of the latest status update
  • Execute an in debt review of the Charter Parties, voyage documents, survey reports and any other clarifying event(s) with agents, terminals, surveyors, charterers to ensure future contracts will be corrected or improved and/or at least in line with the latest market developments
  • Create and conduct training material and share basic knowledge related to the demurrage claim handling process to the various business teams and/or any other involved departments
  • Organize and present on regular basis the demurrage statistics and trends per specific business area to the business teams including providing relevant demurrage related recommendations to further improve our contract language
  • Provide back-up to and help out other Demurrage Analysts, where/when required, by acting as “one team”
  • Maintain all Marine Demurrage procedures and work instructions up-to-date to ensure that the demurrage claim handling process will remain accurate/aligned and compliant and to work consistently in line with company demurrage requirements
  • Provide at each month end, the required input to the Finance department about the outstanding demurrage claim amounts (=accruals)

This is what you bring

  • Minimum Bachelor or Master degree or equivalent in Supply Chain, Marine, Business, Logistics and/or Law
  • Three (3) to four (4) year working experience in a Marine, Logistics/Business or Legal working environment, preferably having a proven understanding of the Marine and Terminal related operations including contracts like charter parties, laytime & demurrage provisions and the terminology associated within the shipping and chemical industry
  • Good knowledge and understanding of commercial contracts like marine charter parties, marine provisions and marine industry related terminology like incoterms, laytime & demurrage provisions will be highly beneficial
  • Excellent analytical and numeracy skills with ability to make sound recommendations and decisions.
  • Ability to schedule work effectively during time constraint situations to meet required contractual or business commitments 
  • Capable to influence and negotiate prudent settlements and to speak out to business management teams.
  • Accurate working attitude with eye for details and understanding contractual clauses and legal impact.
  • Having strong computer skills related to SAP, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Fluent in English will be required; basic knowledge of Dutch might be helpful.
