This is the role

The Compliance Counsel will be responsible for providing advice, monitoring  and counseling LyondellBasell and its subsidiaries on matters such as anti-corruption, anti-trust, economic sanctions, data privacy, and, as well as other traditional compliance issues. This position will be also responsible for implementing, monitoring and continuously improving the company's global compliance programs. 
The Compliance Counsel accomplishes these responsibilities independently through personal efforts, working cross-functionally with others within the legal department and other departments, and selective use of outside counsel. 
This position will be part of the Compliance Department and will report to the Lead Counsel Labor & Employment EMEA who has functional reporting to the Chief Compliance Officer in Houston. This position will be based in  Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This position has international outreach and requires significant travel.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide advice and counsel regarding all compliance and ethics issues, particularly anti-corruption and data privacy;
  • Monitoring and understanding new and upcoming laws, regulations, EU-directives as they pertain to compliance and data privacy and assessing the impact for LYB (e.g. required changes in policies, drafting new policies etc.);
  • Recognize and remediate potential conflicts of interests and other issues implicating compliance;
  • Improving awareness on compliance by designing and conducting in-person training sessions;
  • Coordinating, conducting and managing investigations of compliance issues and handling of data privacy incidents and requests;
  • Provide privacy expertise and advice to Legal and cross-functional colleagues (including HR, IT, HSE, Commercial, and Procurement) on full range data protection issues, including guidance on collecting, sharing and accessing personal data;
  • Help develop, enhance, scale and run the existing global privacy compliance program, including privacy operations and documentation; employee training; policy enforcement, monitoring and auditing; and incident response;
  • Draft external privacy notices and disclosures, and manage/update internal policies, procedures and standards to ensure compliance with global privacy laws;
  • Remain up-to-date on data privacy and security laws and regulations, as well as on technological developments and evolving industry standards to ensure an ongoing ability to provide sound compliance advice;
  • Managing outside counsel and related budgeting and spend;
  • Manage and review relationships with third party vendors who support data protection issues.

With your strong written and verbal communication skills, you easily network, and collaborate with internal stakeholders from other departments and in different countries. You are an approachable person and you like to be the go to person for all compliance matters. Building trust is what you do by nature. With your outgoing personality you are energized by speaking in public and doing live compliance training to your colleagues on compliance policies.

This is what you bring

  • Law degree required;
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience is required in a Regulatory or Compliance position, 10+ years preferred;
  • Advanced knowledge of anti-corruption, anti-trust, data privacy and economic sanctions laws and regulations in the U.S., EU and elsewhere;
  • Experience leading and overseeing internal investigations;
  • Experience leading in-person training sessions;
  • Ability to manage conflict and find practical solutions without compromising values;
  • Highly motivated, demonstrated ability to build relationships of trust and acts as an advocate for the compliance department in the EMEA region;
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and work effectively and cross-functionally with employee , employee representatives, (senior) managers and employees at all levels;
  • Ability to meet or exceed deadlines, prioritize, multi-task, and maintain flexibility in fast-paced, changing environment;
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to anticipate and address conflict and difficult issues in a professional, assertive and proactive manner;
  • Proven experience to work under pressure;
  • Excellent organizational, written, verbal and presentation skills including the ability to interpret and communicate compliance guidance internally;
  • Fluency in English and Dutch essential. Knowledge of a third European language desirable.
