The Process Safety Engineer serves as the APS Americas subject matter expert and strategic leader for Process Safety Management (PSM), including combustible dust risk management and other process hazard analysis programs. Reporting to the APS Americas Sr. Manager, the role provides technical leadership and governance for EC manufacturing sites while serving as the process safety and combustible dust resource across APS Americas.

The role partners with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Capital Projects, HSE, Site Leadership, and Corporate Process Safety to identify, evaluate, and reduce process risk; strengthen organizational capability; and ensure compliance with LYB standards and regulatory requirements. A key expectation is building sustainable site ownership by standardizing best practices and embedding process safety into daily operations, decision-making, and continuous improvement. #LI-LL2

A Day in the Life

Process Safety Leadership & Capability Building

  • Serve as the APS Americas subject matter expert for Process Safety Management and combustible dust risk management.
  • Build site process safety capability and ownership through coaching, training, technical leadership, and GoalZERO-aligned hazard recognition.
  • Provide technical guidance to site leadership and share best practices across APS and Corporate Process Safety networks.

Process Hazard Analysis & Risk Management

  • Lead PHAs, DHAs, LOPAs, and related risk assessments to identify, document, and reduce process hazards.
  • Develop long-term risk assessment strategies and strengthen safeguard effectiveness across manufacturing sites.

PSM Systems, Compliance & Governance

  • Standardize PSM tools, templates, and practices to support practical, operations-based compliance with LYB and regulatory requirements.
  • Assess process safety system effectiveness and drive sustainable site ownership and improvement.
  • Support OE assessments, process safety audits, compliance reviews, and management system assessments.
  • Drive timely closure of PS risk mitigation actions/findings from PHAs and audits.

Combustible Dust Management

  • Provide technical leadership for combustible dust risk management, DHAs, and mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure combustible dust programs align with LYB expectations, regulatory requirements, and recognized industry standards.
  • Partner with sites to prioritize combustible dust risk reduction, education, incident prevention, and best-practice deployment.

Incident Learning, Metrics & Continuous Improvement

  • Support investigations of process safety incidents, loss of primary containment events, combustible dust events, and significant near misses.
  • Facilitate root cause analysis, corrective action verification, and communication of lessons learned across APS facilities.
  • Develop and maintain leading and lagging process safety performance indicators.
  • Analyze trends, communicate risks, and drive improvement initiatives addressing systemic vulnerabilities.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, HSE, Quality, Reliability, Automation, and Capital Projects to embed process safety into execution.
  • Advise on capital projects and operating changes to ensure process safety risks are identified and managed.
  • Build cross-functional partnerships that support consistent, sustainable process safety performance.
  • Collaborates with LYB Corporate Process Safety & networks to align APS practices

You Bring This Value

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related Engineering discipline required.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in process safety, chemical manufacturing, petrochemical manufacturing, specialty chemical manufacturing, or related industrial operations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and facilitating Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and HAZOP studies.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements and risk-based process safety principles.
  • Experience with Management of Change (MOC), PSSR, incident investigation, and process safety management systems.
  • Knowledge of combustible dust hazards, Dust Hazard Analysis methodologies, and risk management practices.
  • Experience supporting or leading risk reduction and process safety improvements
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability for some travel throughout APS Americas to support site needs.

  • Experience supporting multiple manufacturing sites.
  • Experience within chemical, petrochemical, compounding, polymers, composites, or related process industries.
