The Lead Data Engineer is responsible for defining, governing, and actively building end-to-end data architecture capabilities supporting LyondellBasell’s Advanced Polymer Solutions (APS) business. This role owns the full data scope across master data, data enablement, dataflow gate management, governance, and consumption, ensuring a back-to-back architecture integrated with APS business and technology processes. The position ensures continuity, clear accountability, and alignment with business priorities while delivering scalable, secure, and business-driven data solutions across ERP platforms, cloud data services, analytics, and AI enablement.
This position is both strategic and hands-on, accountable not only for defining enterprise and APS aligned data strategy and architectural guardrails, but primarily for direct contribution in key areas such as data modeling, integration patterns, analytical dataset design, and cloud data platform implementation. Operating in a fast moving, agile environment, the role partners closely with technology and business leaders to turn data into a competitive advantage, drawing inspiration from modern, product centric and customer oriented (B2C style) data practices.

A Day in the Life

The Lead Data Engineer serves as the primary owner of APS data architecture and is responsible for translating business requirements into executable data solutions. This role is expected to operate with a high degree of hands on involvement. The Lead Data Engineer is part of the digital technology organization. The individual will work with the APS Digital Transformation Panel to implement end-to-end data architecture, data strategy, and governance. This role will leverage enterprise data management and governance practices as established by the Enterprise Data & Architecture organization. Their focus will remain on prioritizing, sequencing, and executing initiatives with close partnership with the APS organization. The Engineer will also have primary responsibility for ensuring our application and engineering teams have the necessary information and guidance to implement end to end data solutions. The architect is a champion for data analysis and logical data modeling and provides technical mentoring to other DT staff to support skills development. 


Key responsibilities include:
•    Hands-On expertise in Data Engineer principles, methods, and tools; deep understanding of data management including integrations, storage, Master Data Management, and analytics.
•    Deep understanding of how APS business processes and operations are supported by data, and how future process changes impact data usage.
•    Ability to translate APS business requirements into logical, physical, and analytical data architecture designs.
•    Maximize enterprise and APS data assets by reducing redundancy, enabling secure accessibility, and promoting shared understanding through metadata management.
•    Develop technical architecture across APS business processes, ERP systems, data flows, and analytics consumption patterns.
•    Collaborate closely with APS Digital Transformation Panel to execute aligned and prioritized ADO projects .
•    Define and communicate future state data requirements supporting APS platforms, analytics, and AI initiatives.
•    Strong experience in data integration, ingestion, and data conversion across ERP and non ERP systems.
•    Excellent skills in data engineering, data modeling, data services, reporting, visualization, and analytics platforms.
•    Proven hands on experience designing and supporting data ingestion pipelines, data transformations, and analytical datasets.
•    In depth knowledge and proven experience with cloud based data platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP), including data lake, cloud data warehouse architectures.
•    Working knowledge of master data management and enterprise data governance practices.
•    End to end data architectural accountability for enterprise and APS data warehousing, analytics, and visualization solutions.
•    Translate strategic APS data requirements into enterprise information architecture artifacts, including enterprise data models, metamodels, common business vocabularies, and taxonomies.
•    Leverage existing or define new data standards and reference architectures for APS initiatives.
•    Experience in Agile development methodology/Scrum framework.
•    Proficient in DevOps and Agile concepts & development principles.
•    Champion data driven capabilities across operational, commercial, and digital domains—borrowing from B2C data practices such as customer analytics, personalization, and experience measurement where relevant. 
•    Data Engineering Certification from Microsoft Azure, AWS or Google (Microsoft Azure preferred).

You Bring This Value

This is a Lead Data Engineer position requiring either a degreed professional who possesses a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business or Engineering with a minimum of twelve (12) years of relevant experience. This individual must demonstrate strong technical expertise and knowledge in each of the following technology disciplines:

 

Education & Experience
•    Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or related field. 
•    12+ years of relevant experience in data architecture, data engineering, analytics platforms, or enterprise data management. 
•    6+ years of experience creating logical and physical data models, including relational, dimensional, and analytical schemas. 
•    5+ years of experience as a Data Architect supporting cloud based BI, analytics, and data platform implementations.

 

Technical & Functional Expertise
•    Proven, hands on experience designing and implementing cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP), including data lakes and cloud data warehouses.
•    Strong experience with ERP based data models and enterprise transactional systems (ERP experience preferred over system specific expertise).
•    In depth knowledge and proven hands on experience with cloud data platforms, including Snowflake and Azure SQL.
•    Experience with big data, semi structured data, and real time or near real time data patterns.
•    Experience migrating data platforms from on premise to cloud.
•    Strong understanding of data governance, master data management, and metadata driven architectures.
•    Experience with modern BI and visualization platforms from an architectural perspective.
•    Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD, DataOps, and Agile delivery practices.
•    Familiarity with Supply Chain, manufacturing and inventory management processes.
•    Knowledge of SAP systems and relevant modules is a plus.
