Basic Function
The Environmental Engineer provides support to the Engineered Composites Business Unit in developing, executing, and maintaining site compliance with air, water, and waste regulatory requirements. The individual will interface with a diverse group of customers including process and project engineering, operations, maintenance, plant management, and outside regulatory agencies. #LI-RH1
Roles & Responsibilities
• Reports to Site Manager.
• Prepares and presents agency documents such as air permits emission reports, incident reports, variance petitions and other surveys.
• Provides support for air, water, waste, and other environmental regulatory and internal program requirements based on the specific needs of the site.
• Maintains site Responsible Care, ISO 14001 Management Systems and EPA RMP as applicable.
• Conducts site Environmental Audits including ISO 14001, site contractors, and tenants as applicable.
• Develop and implement programs to comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, permit requirements, internal policies, and standards.
• Prepares reports associated with environmental performance (e.g., spills, emissions, discharges).
• Assist facilities with monitoring, sampling, and testing programs and activities as needed to demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements and permit limitations.
• Participates in audits and other regulatory compliance assurance activities.
• Interacts with operations and other plant personnel to ensure a consistent understanding of regulatory requirements
• Interacts and negotiates with agency and audit personnel to present the site’s position on the interpretation and applicability of environmental regulations and permit requirements.
Min. Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Sciences with 10 or more years of relevant environmental experience, preferably in refining/chemical manufacturing industry.
• Minimum of 7-10 years’ experience in environment compliance.
• Working knowledge in the use of Environmental Management Systems.
• Experience interacting with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
• Ability to interpret and apply environmental regulations on a practical basis.
• Excellent record keeping skills (filing, organization, etc.).
• Excellent interpersonal skills, relationship building across multiple sites, and team skills.
• Ability to manage environmental data and recordkeeping requirements.
• Knowledge of EPA and state of Ohio/Michigan environmental standards.
• Willing and able to travel up to 20% at times.
Preferred Qualifications
• Working knowledge of IEPA permit process and regulations. Demonstrated success in planning and implementing effective environmental systems which will eventually include ISO14001.
• Training or experience as an internal auditor
