LyondellBasell is seeking a highly motivated Production Engineering Team Lead to join the Bayport PO/TBA site, located approximately 20 miles south of downtown Houston, Texas. With approximately 350 employees, the Bayport site is a world-class chemical manufacturing facility and the largest PO/TBA production site in the world. The Process Engineering Team Lead is a key leadership position within the Bayport Technical organization, reporting directly to the Technical Manager. This role is responsible for leading, coaching, and developing a team of approximately ten Production Engineers while driving safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Bayport's four manufacturing units. The successful candidate will play a critical role in advancing operational excellence, supporting strategic business objectives, and delivering continuous improvement initiatives across the site. In addition, this position serves as the site's co-lead for the Value Enhancement Program (VEP),providing leadership to cross-functional teams responsible for identifying, prioritizing, and executing opportunities that improve profitability, reliability, and overall site performance.
A Day in the Life
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of approximately ten Production Engineers supporting Bayport's operating units.
- Provide technical leadership in Process Safety Management (PSM) programs, including PHAs, MOCs, PSV calculations, alarm management, incident investigations, and safety critical systems.
- Establish team priorities and manage resources to support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.
- Develop employee capabilities through onboarding, coaching, mentoring, performance management, and succession planning.
- Provide engineering leadership for Operational Excellence, Process Safety, capital projects, and turnaround activities.
- Drive achievement of site safety, reliability, quality, production, and cost performance objectives.
- Support troubleshooting and resolution of complex process and operational challenges.
- Lead teams in evaluating, prioritizing, and implementing opportunities to improve safety, reliability, production capability, and profitability.
- Review and approve engineering calculations, technical evaluations, project scopes, emissions calculations, and other key deliverables.
- Partner with Manufacturing, Commercial, and Business teams to optimize asset performance and maximize site value.
- Serve as the primary backup to the Bayport Technical Manager.
- Approve designated technical and safety documentation, including Management of Change (MOC) and Safety System Disablement activities.
- Support development of the site's Asset Strategy and long-range capital and expense plans.
- Co-lead the site's Value Enhancement Program (VEP) by guiding cross-functional teams to identify, implement, and track value generating opportunities.
- Deliver GoalZERO performance through visible leadership, workforce engagement, and effective use of management systems.
- Ensure compliance with Operational Excellence standards, the LyondellBasell Code of Conduct, and all company policies.
You Bring This Value
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
- Typically a minimum of eight (8) years of experience in chemical manufacturing.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities with a strong ability to influence and collaborate across functions.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic operating environment.
- Strong coaching, mentoring, and performance management skills.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Solid understanding of Process Safety Management systems and a demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement.
- Proven commitment to Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) excellence through workforce engagement and leadership.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated proactive approach to identifying and implementing improvements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous direct supervisory experience leading engineering or technical personnel.
- Experience supporting or leading Process Safety Management programs.
- Demonstrated experience driving operational improvement, reliability enhancement, or value creation initiatives in a manufacturing environment.
- Prior experience supporting turnaround planning and execution.
- Experience in propylene oxide, tert-butyl alcohol, or related petrochemical manufacturing processes.
