The Safety Engineer role is an individual contributor who serves in a safety professional support role for the Bayport Polymers sites. They shall possess an in-depth knowledge of the safety profession as well as OSHA regulations and will apply regulatory, process, and organizational knowledge to solve problems and make recommendations. The candidate will proactively take ownership and influence decisions for the development and continued improvement of safety programs and processes at the Bayport Complex. They shall be a dedicated Safety professional with a sincere attitude and a relentless drive to positively impact safety performance and processes. This person will be expected to work independently, develop professionally and provide guidance to those with less safety experience.
A Day in the Life
• Recognized site leader of corporate GOALZERO safety and performance culture
• Own and actively manage the site’s Safety systems to ensure compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements
• Able to effectively manage multiple tasks, but also able to delegate tasks which can be performed by support personnel or other professionals
• Works independently and as a team to identify, plan and complete work that has a positive impact on worker safety and health protection
• Interact with supervision, technicians, and maintenance staff to ensure a consistent understanding of both regulatory and site requirements
• Understands the operations units and processes to which the regulations and requirements must be applied and is able to identify opportunities for improvement
• Adapt to the situation at hand and be able to recommend solutions. Able to identify safety issues, develop an action plan to address issues, execute the plan and evaluate success of the program.
• Ability to establish measurable objectives, monitor performance and track progress.
• Develop, implement and support safety and health policies, procedures and programs
• Serve as Safety resource for management, operations, and maintenance functions
• Provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice.
• Facilitates formal incident investigation teams when needed
• Coordinate and conduct regular Safety training and orientation as required
• Hosts VPP and agency inspections and maintains safety, security and health systems and supporting documentation to illustrate compliance with regulations, OE, and/or VPP Star requirements
You Bring This Value
• Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, health and safety, industrial hygiene, or technical related field
• Minimum 4 years of experience in safety engineering or a related field in a petrochemical manufacturing environment
• Demonstrated Leadership behaviors and skills are critical to this role
• Must possess strong HSE Regulatory and technical knowledge
• Must possess a strong knowledge of OSHA regulations
• Candidate is recognized as having technical expertise in core areas of responsibility. Additionally, requires a working knowledge of industrial hygiene, incident investigation, and behavioral safety; and is expanding knowledge in areas such as process safety and loss prevention
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to help the HSE department, operations, and other functional groups implement those process changes or procedures necessary to comply with the regulations and requirements
• Able to communicate across multiple levels within the site and in different group setting
• Ability to represent company with regulatory agencies
Preferred Qualifications
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is strongly preferred
• Experience working in a polymers (polypropylene) manufacturing environment
