Basic Function

We are currently seeking to fill a Polymer Chemist position at LyondellBasell’s Bayport Polymers (BYO) site located 27 miles east of Houston, TX. Our BYO site has approximately 316 employees and contractors and is a world class chemical manufacturing facility with 4 operating units that produce Polypropylene (PP) resins. The Polymer Chemist will provide technical, operational, and analytical support to the Quality Control laboratory (Lab), production units, and business teams for driving improvements to product quality processes and the Lab.  The Polymer Chemist also supports compliance requirements for ISO, ASTM and other industry standards.  The focus of the position is to ensure the Lab provides accurate, reliable, and timely data to support both internal and external customers. The individual reports to the Technical Manager for BYO.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Lab focal point for new projects and new instrumentation setup
• Identifies and drives improvement in Lab processes/systems, testing, methods, and cost
• Provides instrumentation troubleshooting support beyond Lab Specialist and Day Tech capabilities
• Ensures timely calibration and maintenance of Lab equipment
• Provides technical input and guidance to ensure Lab support for process troubleshooting, process improvement, and new business development
• Focal point for operating units and business units to interface with the Lab for analytical support
• Provides technical training on Lab quality systems for Lab technicians
• Sets high expectations for quality and timeliness of action item (MOC, Intelex, etc.) resolution
• Supports business teams as needed to develop testing protocols and methods for new products
• Develops and maintains industry best practice knowledge and applies to the Lab
• Supports product quality incident investigations
• Leads formal investigation teams for continual improvement
• Responsible for implementation and adherence of relevant Operational Excellence & corporate standards

Min. Qualifications

• BS degree in Chemistry or related STEM field
• 6+ years of experience in a refining, petrochemical, or chemical environment
• Demonstrated corporate competencies
• Demonstrated troubleshooting skills and techniques
• Demonstrated IT capability for implementation of analytical instrumentation
• Good computing skills  
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and conflicting priorities 
• Demonstrated ability in project management and gap closures

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of polymer lab experience
  • Experience using Gas Chromatography, Melt Flow, XRF, IR, OCS and Brabender Extruder
  • Experience using lab software including Sample Manager, SAP and Chromeleon 
  • MOC system qualification or similar MOC experience
  • Proven ability to identify continuous improvement and value generation opportunities and deliver solutions #LI-CB1
