Basic Function
The HSE Specialist is an individual contributor who serves in a health and safety (HS) support role for the Morris organization to identify and resolve safety-related issues. They are responsible for HS compliance with state and federal regulations and corporate Operational Excellence standards. They provide daily field support to help drive safety behaviors and apply their regulatory, process and organizational knowledge to make recommendations and solve problems. The HSE Specialist interfaces with a diverse group of customers, including process and project engineering, operations, maintenance, plant management, and outside regulatory agencies. They will actively participate in the development and continual improvement of HS programs and processes, and take ownership of programs assigned to them to manage. The HSE Specialist reports to the HSE Manager.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Lead and champion the GoalZERO safety culture at the Morris Plant.
- Provide strong field (boots on ground) engagement with Operations, Maintenance and contractors with a high level of visibility and sense of urgency.
- Provide technical support to site personnel to achieve compliance with standards and regulations, including conducting procedure reviews, program assessments, and field audits.
- Own and actively manage site HS programs and procedures, and use knowledge and expertise in HS systems to advise all site personnel.
- Identify improvements and execute actions that drive site performance in occupational safety, health, emergency response and security.
- Understand the operations units and processes to which the regulations and safety practices must be applied.
- Support site VPP by participating in annual self-assessments and leading monthly audits.
- Assist in developing and leading Safety Meetings, Walkabouts, HSE training, and other safety-related activities.
- Participate on and lead site safety teams and incident investigations.
- Participate on the site ERT.
- Provide plantwide safety on-call coverage on a rotating basis with other HSE Specialists and Engineers.
- Host HSE contractors and visitors onsite as needed.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Min. Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required. An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree and/or professional certification in Industrial or Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene or other related discipline is a plus.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in the petrochemical industry.
- Demonstrated support of and participation in occupational safety programs.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively lead teams to accomplish objectives.
- Experience in identifying gaps in performance, and developing and executing action plans to correct those issues.
- Ability to establish measurable objectives, monitor performance, and track progress.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and work independently.
- Excellent computer skills and proficiency in common business software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook; Sharepoint; Teams).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in the occupational safety field in an industrial environment.
- Working knowledge of industrial safety and health procedures, OSHA standards and emergency response.

- The anticipated salary range for this position is $129,040 - $177,430. The selected candidate’s compensation will be determined based on their skills, experience, and qualifications.
