Process Chemist - Matagorda Plant

We are currently seeking to fill a Process Chemist position at LyondellBasell’s Matagorda site located 13 miles south of Bay City, TX. Our Matagorda site has approximately 225 employees and contractors and is a world class chemical manufacturing facility with 4 operating units that produce high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic resins. Basic Function

The Process Chemist leads new product development efforts for the HDPE production at Matagorda. The individual provides expert assistance to trouble shoot production and laboratory development challenges and opportunities.  The Process Chemist is also responsible for the continuous improvement of the Quality System including customer, regulatory and optimization impact for the site.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • In conjunction with the Polymers R&D group, develop and implement new products for the Matagorda HPDE plant.  Execute needed modifications for the Plant Process and Laboratory functions
  • Serve as interface between Business and Plant Operations for the Pressure Pipe and Film Market Segments.
  • Provide an expert source of technical information for efficient troubleshooting efforts for the site process, laboratory and quality efforts.  
  • Implement and maintain the site’s compliance with Operational Excellence, ISO 9001, and other quality standards.
  • Effectively communicate with Site Management, as well as Senior LyondellBasell Management.
  • Coach less experienced site personnel and provide training for others.
Min. Qualifications

• BS degree in Chemistry, Advanced degree preferred
• 8+ years of experience in a refining, petrochemical, or chemical environment
• Excellent written & verbal communication skills
• Strong personal leadership skills
• Ability to prepare and deliver complex technical reports and presentations
• Capable of influencing others in all positions, including management
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Proven ability to devise new approaches to problems encountered and to drive team consensus
• Knowledge of polymer processes is a plus
