Basic Function

The CAE Materials Characterization Engineer is responsible to provide materials characterization, data analysis, and generation of advanced design data required by internal and external customers supporting CAD / CAE simulation and structural analysis.  Characterizations by example include thermal, rheological, and mechanical data for mold flow analyses, static and dynamic tensile / flexural data, creep data, fatigue data, compression data, and others supporting stress-strain simulation, mechanical performance at high strain rate, product life time related characterization, and thermal analysis.  This role will also support customer mold filling simulations with Moldflow or similar software, serving as a back-up or supplementary support to CAE Design Engineer role. #LI-LL2

Roles & Responsibilities

General
•    Conduct mechanical materials characterization or other testing to generate quality data required by internal and external customers, maintaining and improve equipment and testing protocols to optimize and enhance test capabilities and quality data generation.
•    Work closely with CAE Design Engineer for materials sampling, data processing, analysis, and report generation. 
•    Support special materials characterization including static stress-strain, high speed tensile, flexural and compression, as well as creep, relaxation, shear, and fatigue. 
•    Prepare and conduct material testing required for injection molding simulation internally and externally, supporting RD analytical testing including DSC, TGA, and TMA.   
•    Focal point for out-sourcing of material characterization, obtaining quotes, working closely with PAD Engineers for resin samples, and verifying/formatting tested data.
•    Support the CAE Design Engineer as needed in customer mold filling simulations with Moldflow or similar software, serving as a back-up or supplementary support to CAE Design Engineer role.
•    Support PAD and Business organization with advanced design data generation.
•    Support sales, marketing, and business development teams to promote LYB products and innovations when needed.
•    Support other activities related to product development as needed.

Min. Qualifications

Education
•    Bachelor's degree in areas including Polymers, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering
•    Ms. Or Ph.D. preferred in areas including Polymers, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering

 

Work Experience 
•    Five years’ work experience with polymer materials characterization and skills in operation of advanced mechanical characterization instruments and testing protocols for generation of quality data.  An advanced degree in areas stated above can be substituted for 5 years work experience.
•    Prefer experience in injection molding simulation with Moldflow or similar software

 

Languages English, additional language preferred

Preferred Qualifications

Other Skills
Knowledgeable of polymeric materials including mechanical properties, design life, viscoelasticity, rheology, stress-relaxation, fatigue, stress-strain at high strain rate. 
Knowledgeable in the injection molding process of thermoplastic polymers, preferably lab or work experience in operation of the equipment.
Knowledgeable in model building with CAD/CAE programs and tooling and part design for the injection molding process.
Ability to process and explain test results in easily understandable language.
Knowledge and experience in polymer blending and/or compounding processes preferred but not required.
Computer skills and Microsoft Office experience including Word Documents, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.
