The Global Turnarounds (GT) organization provides governance, planning, and execution oversight for LyondellBasell's large and mega-complexity turnaround events, typically exceeding $50 million in spend. These events are critical to maintaining asset safety and reliability, operational excellence, and long-term business performance across the company's manufacturing network.
The Turnaround Engineering Manager is responsible for leading turnaround engineering, project integration, and early scope development activities across multiple turnaround events. Through direct leadership of the Turnaround Engineering team, this role ensures engineering readiness, effective integration of capital and expense work, and successful delivery of critical pre-event milestones. The position plays a key role in aligning operations, maintenance, engineering, and project organizations under a "One Team" approach to turnaround planning and execution.
Working closely with Turnaround Event Managers and site leadership teams, the Turnaround Engineering Manager drives implementation of the Turnaround Excellence Model and provides governance over engineering and project integration deliverables to achieve turnaround objectives related to safety, scope, cost, schedule, and quality. The role is responsible for identifying and mitigating execution risks while ensuring engineering resources are effectively deployed across a portfolio of turnaround events.
The position resides within the Global Asset Integrity and Turnarounds (GAIT) organization and reports to the Director, Global Turnarounds. Periodic travel within the United States is required to support turnaround preparation, readiness reviews, and execution activities.
A Day in the Life
- Directly leads a team of four to six Turnaround Engineers and a flexible Design Team of two to six designers and
- draftsmen, depending on turnaround activity levels.
- Accountable for the development, performance, and career progression of Turnaround Engineers, ensuring successful delivery of event milestones, engineering deliverables, and professional growth objectives.
- Partners closely with Turnaround Event Managers to deliver engineering execution and project integration for five
- to six annual turnaround events, supporting combined capital and expense portfolios ranging from $40MM to $80MM annually.
- Provides leadership and governance to drive site adoption of the Turnaround Excellence Model, with a particular
- focus on project delivery, project integration, and engineering readiness.
- Assures the quality and timely delivery of engineering and capital project deliverables, identifying and mitigating
- risks that could impact successful turnaround execution.
- Serves as a key member of the Turnaround Management Team (TAMT) and Turnaround Steering Team (TAST),
- influencing event strategy, risk management, and execution planning.
- Manages low-to-medium complexity turnaround-related capital projects with aggregate expenditures ranging from $10MM to $30MM.
- Communicates project status, key performance indicators, risks, and performance metrics for turnaround capital and expense scope to site and turnaround leadership teams.
- Leads continuous improvement initiatives that enhance turnaround planning, engineering effectiveness, project integration, cost performance, and execution reliability.
You Bring This Value
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or related technical field.
- Advanced degree preferred
Work Experience
- Minimum 10 years of experience in a process plant or comparable environment is required
- Prior turnaround / project experience (with turnaround integration) required
- 3 years of management experience preferred
