Basic Function

The Senior Tax Planning Manager will be responsible for identifying, developing and implementing US federal and international tax planning ideas, analyzing and modelling the impact of US tax legislation and regulations on LyondellBasell operations.  The primary focus is expected to be US international tax planning including managing/providing oversight and quality control review of the US international income tax compliance and reporting function but as needed will include other US federal income tax planning and risk management areas. This position reports to the Associate Director, Global Tax Planning.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies for US group and foreign subsidiaries, coordinating with non-US tax colleagues and external advisors where needed 
  • Monitor and interpret proposed tax legislative changes, quantify potential impact, and identify planning opportunities 
  • Research enacted legislation and draft technical memos to communicate impact of legislative and regulatory changes to Tax leadership and US compliance team
  • Provide support for M&A activities including diligence, structuring, and risk assessment
  • Partner with business groups to support operational tax related matters and identify tax opportunities
  • Provide support for US income tax audits, including preparing responses in collaboration with tax compliance team, interfacing with IRS as  needed
  • Provide coaching and training to other tax department members including application of tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements
  • Support tax accounting function including documenting FIN 48 positions, APB23 analysis, and reviewing foreign inclusion calculations 
  • Manage US international income tax compliance function including review of forms and calculations (e.g. Subpart F, GILTI, FDII, Foreign Tax Credit, 5471s, 8865s, 8858s, 1118s, etc.).  This may also include co-sourcing with accounting firms
  • Lead FATCA compliance including review of W8BENE and Common Reporting Standard “CRS” forms and providing tax technical advice to corporate functions and businesses
  • Identify and drive process improvements and efficiencies for areas of responsibility

Min. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting 
  • Minimum of eight (8) years related experience with a combination of public accounting and/or public company experience
  • Advanced knowledge of US federal income tax concepts including Subchapter C
  • Advanced knowledge of US international tax concepts including Subpart F, GILTI, FDII, Foreign Tax Credit, E&P, §956, §1248, §245A, withholding taxes, and treaty analysis 
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting legislative and regulatory changes to tax provisions 
  • Solid understanding of tax accounting concepts including APB 23, FIN 48, and effective tax rate analysis
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills
  • Ability to work cohesively as a cross-functional team member
  • Proven ability to work independently, think critically, and make decisions exercising sound business judgement
  • Proficient in tax research and writing skills
  • Experience managing, training, and developing other team members 
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (tax or finance) and / or JD (with emphasis on taxation) preferred
  • CPA preferred 
  • SAP experience a plus
