Basic Function

The Counsel, Sustainability & Corporate Affairs role is part of the legal team that provides support to LyondellBasell’s sustainability strategy function, government relations and corporate communications.  In this role, you will serve as the legal subject matter expert on environmental marketing claims laws, supporting corporate communications, and providing advice and counsel on related sustainability strategies and advocacy efforts.

Roles & Responsibilities

General:

  • Serve as the legal subject matter expert on environmental marketing claims laws, including tracking developments globally, providing research and guidance on specific questions, and updating and delivering training
  • Provide legal support for corporate communications, including reviewing marketing materials, speeches, press releases and holding statements, and coordinating other legal support as necessary
  • Provide legal support for U.S. federal and state government relations on sustainability topics, including assessing impacts of proposals, reviewing and providing input on advocacy strategies and positions, and providing advice and counsel on comments and other submittals; provide advice and counsel on political law questions 
  • Provide legal support to the company’s product sustainability team
  • Provide legal support for sustainability disclosures, ratings and reporting 
  • Provide legal support for government subsidy and funding opportunities aligned to the company’s sustainability strategy
  • Support the development of sustainability strategies 
  • Assist in the negotiation and drafting of contracts with various vendors and partners of the Sustainability & Corporate Affairs organization

Min. Qualifications

Area of Expertise, Requirements:

  • Legal work experience demonstrating strong regulatory interpretation and analytical skills, attention to detail, excellent oral and written communication skills, and legal drafting and negotiation skills
  • Experience advising on environmental marketing claims laws, voluntary and mandatory ESG disclosures, and sustainability communications is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and stakeholder management skills; ability to work across functions to achieve results 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work in a dynamic environment
  • Solution oriented and a positive mindset
  • Some travel required

Education:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Member in good standing with a state bar
  • Current admission or eligibility for admission to the Texas Bar
  • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability or environmental field is preferred

Work Experience: 

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience practicing law
  • Experience in the petrochemical industry is preferred
