Basic Function

This position is in the US Indirect Tax group which will assist with handling multi-state sales and use, federal and state excise, Canadian GST/PST, gross receipts and miscellaneous taxes for multiple entities operating in many jurisdictions. This position will be focused on Audit defense, general ledger account reconciliations, research, vendor tax resolution issues, tax automation, system maintenance and special projects. 

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibilities will consist of Audit & Audit defense including communication with external Auditors, data retrieval and analysis, reconciliations, sample review, transaction review and research to support taxability determinations, and organization and maintenance of audit documentation.
  • Conduct research and communicate tax/financial impact analysis of federal and state excise tax, motor fuel tax and Canadian GST matters.
  • Monitor Canadian GST, U.S. federal and state excise, motor fuel law changes and make the taxability adjustments in Vertex O and update SAP.
  • Provide support and resolutions regarding vendor sales/use and Canadian GST issues, procurements, disbursements, parked invoices, etc.
  • Provide support to Supply Chain in customer master tax classification and billing issues.
  • Assist with responding to taxability or procedural questions from various internal departments.
  • Assist in Vertex /SAP testing & integration.
  • Develop and present training to internal client groups.
  • Maintain desk policies and procedures for various existing processes. Create new procedures as required for work transitioned into existing processes as a result of mergers and acquisitions.
  • Provide support to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) documentation requirements.
  • Conduct self-audits on the accuracy of the reported amounts of use tax, including data retrieval and analysis, reconciliations, sample review, transaction review and research to support taxability determinations, and organization and maintenance of audit documentation and manage sales, use and excise tax audits from the IRS. 
  • Provide transactional tax planning and advisory support involving tax language review of sales and purchase contracts. 
  • Provide support to the procurement department on the determination of the need to report use tax on investments. 

Min. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Minimum of 8-10 Years of relevant tax experience. 
  • Demonstrable track record of Audit defense and proven outcomes.
  • Specific knowledge of Texas, Illinois and Louisiana sales and use tax laws and regulations as applicable to manufacturers and/or refiners is required.
  • Knowledge of multi-state sales and use tax compliance requirements is required.
  • Experience with an on-line state tax research system is required, preferably Thomson Reuters Checkpoint.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.
  • The ideal candidate is results driven, strong in initiative, well organized and able to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written, are essential with ability to communicate complex situations efficiently.
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment and possess excellent analytical skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA license, CPA candidate, CMI designation or advanced degree is preferred (but not required). 
  • Prior experience with SAP is preferred.
