Basic Function

The Sr. Manager, Americas External Affairs & Crisis Management leads a full range of Corporate Communications strategies and tactics. They will be responsible for managing an extensive stakeholder and client base, including operating as the primary point of contact for at least two executives. The development and execution of communications strategies and materials using best-in-class methods to protect the company’s license to operate and grow are core components of this role. Additionally, he/she will be responsible for the development of major corporate initiative message houses, policies and strategies and associated leadership communications materials.


Management of highly sensitive and escalated situations on topics such as social, environmental and climate justice are critical to the success of the individual in this role. They will also engage with and counsel U.S. leaders and is responsible for preserving, protecting and enhancing our U.S. reputation, as well as managing stakeholder / client interactions. This individual will partner with the business to identify, assess and mitigate reputational risks, and ensure the team delivers proactive, positive storytelling in the region. 


They will also be responsible for leading the Americas incident and crisis communications process, resources and department training, while adhering to the Incident Command System model. They will be a company spokesperson and manage media / stakeholder interactions. 


This individual will be responsible for managing and developing direct reports and effectively handle poor performers. They will develop the strategic direction of the team and will implement metrics systems and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to benchmark progress and success of communications initiatives. This individual will help drive Public Affairs engagement plans, working in concert with global colleagues, while ensuring government, community and communications strategies are aligned. Additionally, he/she will manage the budget for this team’s activities.


The Sr. Manager, Americas External Affairs & Crisis Management will report to the Director, Executive, Corporate and Financial Communications. The position is located in downtown Houston.


  • Partner with the Public Affairs Leadership Team to develop and execute communications plans and campaigns for a wide array of corporate activities
  • Responsible for building collaborative relationships with senior management and other key stakeholders to foster employee engagement and enhance company reputation
  • Lead a full range of Corporate Communications strategies and tactics on a regional / global / company level with an enterprise mindset to ensure company initiatives are aligned, such as stakeholder engagement, media relations, employee communications, social media, social investment and communications measurement
  • Lead large, multi-dimensional projects with multiple cross-functional work streams, solves complex issues, develops strategy for execution, or to mitigate and/or manage the situation 
  • Counsels senior leader and C-suite executives for reputation management and manages stakeholder / client interactions and corporate citizenship activities
  • Recognized within the company as a communications expert
  • Develop the strategic direction of the team and supervise the development of communications resources and toolkits, including but not limited to communications plans, key message documents, power point presentations, and training materials
  • Construct strategic plans inclusive of situational analysis, strategies, tactics, timeline, budget and evaluation 
  • Manage the budget associated with the team’s activities 
  • Develop major corporate initiative message houses, policies and strategies (e.g., DEI, Sustainability, Circularity) and associated leadership communications materials
  • Lead strategic planning exercises and promote collaboration and initiative among the team in the development of innovative plans, ideas and concepts 
  • Stay abreast of current events and analyze the situation to advise senior leaders and C-suite executives on the strategic management of campaigns, issues, trends and topics 
  • Lead and foster an environment for innovative content creation and visual storytelling for LyondellBasell 
  • Drive alignment and information sharing among the Public Affairs team on a regional / global / company level related to new messaging, resources, upcoming events/activities, etc. 
  • Think several steps ahead and anticipates the needs of clients / stakeholders and senior leaders and C-suite executives, including business challenges or communication issues
  • Proactively facilitate team and Public Affairs collaboration and functional alignment 
  • Uses metrics to drive decision-making in support of continuous improvement


  • Represent the company internally and externally with the utmost integrity and abides by the LyondellBasell Code of Conduct
  • Act as a company spokesperson and manage media / stakeholder interactions, as well as serve as an incident response communications focal point.
  • Develop, review and edit communication materials from other functional areas where applicable (e.g., external, marketing communications, internal) for accuracy and consistency
  • Enhance client / stakeholder, senior leader and C-suite executive relationships, as well as develop and execute engagement plans and activities in support of the business objectives while preserving / protecting the company’s reputation
  • Create, own and facilitate communications campaigns
  • Counsel and influence senior leaders to increase stakeholder engagement and advance the company’s reputation 
  • Uses impact and influence to secure buy-in/approval from senior leaders and C-suite executives on communications approach 
  • Direct and collaborate with in-house design team to execute creative concepts in alignment with overarching corporate messaging and brand standards
  • Accountable for managing and developing direct reports
  • Perform additional duties as required

  • Command of AP Style, while having strong and efficient writing competencies across digital and print platforms
  • Mastery at multitasking and delivering excellence under pressure
  • Substantial experience supporting business executives and/or C-suite
  • Exhibits and applies emotional intelligence and holds team to the same standard

Min. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Masters Preferred) in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field 
  • 10+ years of corporate communications experience, with an emphasis on stakeholder engagement, reputation and issues management and crisis communications
  • Prior experience leading and managing a team both in-person and virtually
  • Prior experience supporting executives and manufacturing facilities is desired
  • Experience operating in an Incident Command System (or similar) structure and leading a team of communications professionals
  • Chemical industry or similar experience is preferred
  • Agency experience is a plus 
  • Languages English; additional languages a plus
