Basic Function

As Media Relations Advisor, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping and amplifying our company’s voice across both trade and financial media landscapes. As a member of the Corporate Communications team, they will work closely with internal stakeholders across departments to execute strategic communication plans that drive positive brand awareness, secure impactful publicity and ultimately support our key business objectives.

Roles & Responsibilities

General:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key journalists and editors in relevant trade publications and beyond.
  • Liaise with media in a constructive manner, even when circumstances are ambiguous and/or contentious and require clear expectation management and a deliberate, thoughtful approach.
  • Provide strategic counsel and support to internal stakeholders on media-related matters. 
  • Proactively pitch newsworthy company stories, initiatives, and expert insights to secure placements.
  • Monitor media coverage, analyze its impact on brand perception, anticipate potential reputational risks and collaborate with key subject matter experts to develop proactive response plans.
  • Collaborate with the investor relations team to develop and implement impactful financial communication strategies, including managing the development of the company’s Annual Report.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and media landscape changes to inform communication strategies.
  • Manage the company’s bi-weekly, global NewsClips process with a mindset of continuous improvement.
  • Understand and execute against the vision of the company by translating relevant KPIs into target outcomes in the media, financial and executive communications space.
  • Be proactive and think several steps ahead to anticipate needs of clients / stakeholders and management, as well as address conflicting priorities through clear communications to balance workload. 
  • Support Executive Communications, by researching pertinent topics, presenting and summarizing findings in a cogent, succinct manner for topics such as strategic, corporate initiatives, current events and industry and sustainability-related trends.
  • Contribute to the alignment and proactive information sharing among the Corporate Communications team and with key internal stakeholders related to messaging, media resources and upcoming events/activities, etc.


Area of Expertise:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills to produce compelling communication materials, ideally with media relations experience. 
  • Deadline-driven and accountable with a sense of ownership and independence.
  • Detail- and solutions-oriented, adaptable and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment while displaying an upbeat, professional attitude.
  • Clear understanding of media relations processes and ability to interact with media proactively and reactively. Existing relationships with relevant media are a plus; pertinent work samples (press release speeches, etc.) are required for each applicant.
  • Solid knowledge of Associated Press style and adept at proofreading.
  • Strong analytical skills and dedication to continuous improvement to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of communication efforts.
  • Excellent collaboration and listening skills, and ability to contribute to and influence multiple projects and stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to work independently with varying guidance on complex situations, and effectively under pressure using exceptional judgement and emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of discretion, confidentiality and manage sensitive materials. 
  • Sets stretch targets for self to ensure high quality performance, as well as professional and personal development. 
  • Basic knowledge of the chemical industry and sustainability is preferred. 

Min. Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in journalism, communications, business, marketing, public relations or related area of study.
  • Eight or more years of relevant experience required. 
  • Experience working for or supporting a global, public company.
  • Experience in the petrochemical, oil and gas or energy sector. As an alternative, job applicants must have experience working in a professional services environment (legal, accounting and marketing/public relations agencies). 
  • Superior mastery of the English language, particularly in written form, is a must.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and working knowledge of Excel.
  • Familiar with Cision and/or other media and content databases.
