LyondellBasell’s Global Asset Integrity and Turnaround Department is a world-class, central engineering support organization – advancing continuous performance improvements in our petrochemical facilities worldwide.
This position will function as a central Subject Matter Expert in the area of Mechanical Integrity of pressurized process equipment used in the petrochemical industry. The primary responsibility for this position is authoring, optimizing, and implementing programs for effective inspection and repair of stationary equipment in petrochemical facilities. The individual must have the technical leadership and judgment to assess complex technical issues then develop and communicate executable solutions. In addition, the candidate may lead one or more company-wide technology related improvement programs.
This position will primarily support North American facilities but will have a global influence on stationary equipment mechanical integrity programs, tools, and turnarounds. Preferred work location is the Houston Engineering Center in Channelview, Texas.
Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Author, revise, maintain, and implement standards, preferred practices, and guidelines, related to inspection and repair of Stationary Equipment
- Review site mechanical integrity programs to identify gaps. Work with site personnel to align their program to corporate best practices
- Be the primary Stationary Equipment GAIS Auditor for OE Audits in North America, including Inspection Program Analyses to assess and improve effectiveness of programs
- Provide technical leadership to manufacturing sites and projects for equipment design, maintenance, inspection, and turnarounds
- Mentor and train the organization in SME expertise areas, including inspection practices and Meridium, to develop global colleagues and drive systemic improvements
- Provide stationary equipment SME support in the implementation of Turnaround Excellence Protocols and during execution of major turnarounds as needed
- Implement programs and initiatives at site and corporate levels to drive improvements in mechanical integrity and positively impact reliability and/or process safety. This may include support of the over $100MM in annual Stationary Equipment capital spending and $40MM/year in inspection services
- Participate in industry organizations to stay informed of new technology, industry trends, practices, and informally network and benchmark with others in our industry. Research new techniques and tools to enhance business performance
- Function with minimal guidance to successfully manage multiple/changing priorities across multiple sites and functional areas
- Effectively interface across the company building consensus, and working well with people in diverse, multi-culture teams to gain support for organizational goals and facilitate execution of Mechanical Integrity initiatives
- Champion Process Safety, Occupational Safety, and Operational Excellence culture
- Travel up to 20% to US sites is required to meet business needs
Min. Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or equivalent preferred
Experience
- 10 years of experience working as a mechanical engineer is required for degreed candidates
- 20 years of experience as an inspector in the refining, petrochemical, or chemical process industries with a focus on stationary equipment is required for non-degreed candidates. This should include experience in the role of inspector, inspection supervisor, mechanical integrity engineer, or similar
- Broad exposure to stationary equipment and life cycle issues; including specification, design, construction, inspection, and repair

Preferred Qualifications
Skills
- Exceptional analytical skills for analyzing data, problem solving, and developing practical solutions to complex problems
- Experience working in Meridium APM and building queries
- Strong knowledge of inspection work processes, inspection data management and risk-based inspection. API 510/570/580 certifications preferred, but not required
- Knowledgeable in application of industry standards such as ASME, ANSI, ASTM and API as they apply to design, analysis, re-rating and alteration of pressure equipment
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing with internal/external customers
- Capable of influencing others in all positions, including management
Languages
- Must be fluent in English (written and spoken)
