Basic Function

The Manager, Executive Communications & Media leads a full range of Corporate Communications activities involving our C-suite executives. In this role, they will be the key professional responsible for partnering with LyondellBasell executives to develop global executive communications (e.g., presentations, speeches, media appearances, etc.). The Manager, Executive Communications & Media must be able to represent the best interests of the company and C-suite executives with a variety of external stakeholders including, but not limited to, business and financial media, government officials and industry partners. As such, they will partner with Investor Relations and Government Relations regularly. 

 

This individual must be media savvy, and have extensive business knowledge and experience working with Tier 1 business and financial media which has yielded positive results. Additionally, it is important that this individual has experience in managing issues / crisis situations, as they will serve as a company spokesperson for LyondellBasell. They will also be responsible for providing media coaching and guidance to C-suite executives where appropriate.  

 

This is a strategic leadership role responsible for directly counseling members of the company’s leadership team on key internal and external communication engagements using best-in-class methods. They will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing stakeholder relationships, and partnering with the business to identify, assess and mitigate reputational risks. This individual may assist with M&A and issues management communications, as well as support digital and visual storytelling which can be used across a wide array of media (e.g., LYB Advancing Possible content hub, stakeholder engagements, social media). 

 

Evaluating the global external landscape for emerging issues and trends and distilling complex business and operational data to a level that is easy to understand are core aspects of this position. This individual will develop communications to promote thought leadership and positive reputation building. As a trusted business partner for multiple clients, he/she must successfully manage multiple projects and interact professionally with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

 

This position reports to the Sr. Manager, Executive Communications, Media & Sustainability, is located in Houston, TX and has no direct reports.
 

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Public Affairs Leadership Team to develop and execute communication plans and campaigns for a wide array of corporate activities
  • Leads Corporate Communications strategies and tactics on a regional / global / company level with an enterprise mindset to ensure company initiatives are aligned, such as stakeholder engagement, media relations, employee communications, social media, social investment and communications measurement  
  • Provides senior leader and C-suite executives counsel for reputation management and leads stakeholder / client interactions and corporate citizenship activities
  • Leads strategic planning exercises to develop innovative ideas and concepts 
  • Utilizes external analysis to advise senior leaders and C-suite executives on strategic management of campaigns, issues, trends and topics. 
  • Leads and fosters an environment for content creation and visual storytelling for LyondellBasell 
  • Drives alignment and information sharing among the Public Affairs team on a regional / global / company level related to new messaging, resources, upcoming events/activities, etc. 
  • Project owner and/or lead, creating and executing campaigns and projects with skill and professionalism
  • Thinks several steps ahead and anticipates the needs of clients / stakeholders and senior leader and C-suite executives
  • Manages and develops communications resources and toolkits including but not limited to key message documents, power point presentations, and training materials
  • Uses metrics to drive decisions in support of continuous improvement
  • Represents the company with the utmost integrity and abides by the LyondellBasell Code of Conduct
  • Acts as a company spokesperson and manages media / stakeholder interactions, and serves as an incident response communications focal point.
  • Develops, reviews and edits communication materials from other functional areas where applicable (e.g., external, marketing communications, internal) for accuracy and consistency
  • Cultivates and maintains  client / stakeholder relationships, develops and executes engagement plans and activities in support of business objectives
  • Counsels and influences senior leaders to increase stakeholder engagement and advance the company reputation 
  • Uses impact and influence to secure buy-in/approval on communications strategy/approach 
  • Partners with in-house design team to execute creative concepts in alignment with overarching corporate messaging and brand standards
  • May be responsible for managing and developing direct reports in the future 
  • Performs additional duties as required

  • Drive team execution in support of the company’s reputation plan, as well as individual business / client objectives
  • Stay abreast of industry issues / challenges and identify mitigation strategies to alleviate potential reputational risks for the company
  • Command of AP Style, while having strong and efficient writing competencies across digital and print platforms
  • Proven ability to multitask and deliver excellence under pressure
  • Experience supporting site leadership, business executives and/or C-suite
  • Demonstrates and applies emotional intelligence and holds team to the same standard
  • Models diversity, equity and inclusion behaviors, including engendering trust, respect and confidence 
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and manage sensitive materials 
  • Demonstrates exceptional judgement and works effectively under pressure, constantly adjusting priorities as circumstances change

  • Perform any additional duties as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field 
  • Minimum of 10+ years of post-qualification experience in a communications-related field with strong writing, verbal and presentation skills
  • Prior corporate communications experience working across functional teams and with business leaders on complex projects
  • Chemical industry or similar experience is preferred
  • Experience in Issues Management communications is preferred
  • Agency experience is a plus
  • Knowledge of AP style preferred
  • Languages: English; additional languages a plus
