Basic Function

Lead Counsel, I&D will lead a team that provides legal advice and strategic support for LyondellBasell’s I&D business in the Americas regions within company guidelines, policies, and procedures. The team’s remit includes support of the commercial and manufacturing aspects of the I&D business. The position is expected to contribute individually, manage a high performing team, communicate effectively in a driven, high achieving environment, and advise senior management. 

 

The position will be based in Houston and report to the Associate General Counsel, I&D.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Be the primary legal resource for the I&D Americas’ business, commercial, and manufacturing teams.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and direction for the Americas I&D Legal team, which will support the commercial and manufacturing aspects of the I&D business.
  • Be a contributing member of the team by advising on general commercial and manufacturing issues; review, negotiate, and advise on commercial purchase and supply contracts; draft policies, procedures, and other complex legal documents; manage external counsel on discrete projects and engagements; and develop and conduct training programs as needed. 
  • Support LYB’s I&D joint ventures and LYB-nominated JV representatives with legal and strategic advice, including advice on long term relationships with joint venture partners.
  • Work closely with legal leadership to provide delivery of first class and proactive legal advice for internal business clients.
  • Liaise with European and Asia Pacific I&D team leaders to coordinate global commercial practices and identify areas of common need for LYB, and support other cross-functional teams in complex programs or initiatives.
  • Acts as a regional resource for colleagues; may direct the work of other staff members. 
  • Possess and apply a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of Legal risk management to the completion of complex assignments.

Min. Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent degree
  • 12+ years of post-qualification experience in a major law firm or corporation
  • Experience in the chemical, energy or engineering industry is preferred
  • Practical experience with commercial decisions, supply chain and logistical matters, strategic commercial relationships, and the legal issues that arise in such transactions
  • Management experience and coaching skills
