Basic Function

The purpose of the job is to lead the development and execution of the Styrene global business strategy, including benzene procurement, optimizing the short term and long-term profitability of the business. While the business director leads the entire business, this must be accomplished through business teams that are composed of many other functions that have “dotted line” reporting to the director including but not limited to manufacturing, sales, R&D, supply chain, and finance.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development of the global business strategy, and ensures the business strategy and purpose is clearly communicated throughout the organization
  • Accountable for the profit and loss of the global Styrene business.  Drives financial performance and continues value and cost improvements through the business team.
  • Leads a high-performing global team of marketing managers and product traders and indirectly manufacturing, sales, planning, finance, supply chain, and others to foster global P&L transparency, collaboration, and accountability 
  • Coaches staff to improve technical and behavior competencies by establishing personal expectations and development goals
  • Responsible for development of the annual performance plan and long-range business plans 
  • Through staff members, he/she drives continuous improvement efforts such as portfolio management, contract development, pricing strategies, inventory management, and commercial and product development
  • Ensures long-term profitability and growth of the Global Styrene business through extensive collaboration with managers of other business segments and functions including manufacturing, R&D, site optimization, and others.
  • Creates value by understanding markets and competition and being creative in developing opportunities for value creation.  Interacts at very senior levels with key customers.
  • Develops and implements a Styrene and Benzene trading organization (people, processes, tools, governance) that increases the global profitability of the business while reducing financial risk 
  • Develops and grows a profitable circular and low carbon styrene portfolio working with sales to develop a clear and compelling value proposition to customers 
  • Reviews, approves and champions capital investments needed to grow the business and increase the profitability of current assets employed
  • Leads with a continuous improvement mindset, encouraging his/her organization to drive value through LyondellBasell’s Value Enhancement Program
  • Supports local advocacy efforts for Styrene and related products

Min. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required 
  • Technical discipline and/or MBA strongly preferred
  • Significant knowledge of and experience in the petrochemical industry (Typically 12+ years with a minimum 8 years of commercial and managerial experience)
  • Experience leading through significant change 
  • Specific experience fostering relationships with customers as well as working in a commodities trading environment
