Basic Function

Member of the intellectual property team in the U.S.  Responsible for providing legal advice to clients on a wide range of IP matters, ensuring that the best possible intellectual property protection is obtained and maintained for company inventions and in company intellectual property agreements and that the company's commercial activities enjoy freedom to operate.  This position will report to the Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property and will be located in Houston, TX.

Roles & Responsibilities

The incumbent will contribute to the implementation of the company's overall strategy for the protection of intellectual property. Duties include but are not limited to: 
•    Supporting the IP strategy and participating in ensuring a pro-active patenting policy, with a view to detecting inventions at an early stage and ensuring timely and appropriate protection commensurate to their strategic value. 
•    Assisting with the management of the patent portfolio for one or more technologies with some preparation and prosecution of patent applications. 
•    Conducting patent clearances and monitoring of the patent watch to avoid patent disputes, including advance infringement reviews and competition patent portfolio analyses, clearance opinion drafting, and managing outside counsel clearance opinion preparation. 
•    Leveraging an in-depth IP legal knowledge to provide advice and recommendations to executives and management on highly complex matters which have or may have a material financial impact on business activities and operations.
•    Ensuring that R&D, business units and other legal functions are fully aware of the significance of intellectual property matters, including providing from time to time intellectual property counseling and training on patents, copyrights, trade secrets and related topics. 
•    Assiting with administrative and litigation actions, such as patent oppositions, inter partes reviews proceedings and other adversarial proceedings in patent offices and courts. 
•    Resolving legal issues and providing proactive legal advice and counsel in relation to intellectual property matters. 
•    Negotiating and preparing intellectual property agreements, such as license agreements, technical services agreements, university agreements, collaboration agreements, R&D agreements, confidential disclosure agreements.
•    Working with outside counsel on select matters. 
•    Communicating with clients regarding status updates.
•    Counseling and assist with development of corporate policies and standards relating to trademarks, copyrights, social media, Internet domain names, and other areas of intellectual property.
 

Min. Qualifications

Education:
•    Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry
•    U.S. qualified lawyer (J.D.) with admission before a state bar 
•    Full professional qualification to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office 
Work Experience: 
•    A minimum of 4 years active practice within the intellectual property field, including experience in preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the U.S. and in other jurisdictions (e.g. PCT, EPC), evaluating and preparing intellectual property opinions, litigation of patent and other intellectual property disputes and preparing and negotiating license agreements and other intellectual property related contracts at the international level
