Basic Function

Member of the intellectual property team in the U.S.  Responsible for providing legal support relating to agreement negotiation, including confidentiality agreements globally within company guidelines, policies, and procedures. This position will be located in Houston, TX.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • The incumbent will contribute to the implementation of the company's overall strategy for the protection of intellectual property. Duties include but are not limited to the following: 
  • Prepare and negotiate contracts and other documents, resolve legal issues, and provide proactive legal advice relating to the IP department, in particular, confidentiality and trade secrets.
  • Advise clients on the legal aspects of contracts, transactions, and issues relating to confidentiality and related transaction issues.
  • Ensures clients are fully aware of the significance of legal matters, including providing related training.
  • Review, negotiate, draft and advise policies, procedures and other legal documents.
  • Support the IP strategy and participate in ensuring a pro-active IP support to the company. 
  • Leverage an in-depth legal knowledge to provide advice and recommendations to executives and management on highly complex matters which have or may have a material financial impact on business activities and operations.
  • Communicate with clients regarding status updates.
  • Ability to balance the legal issues of a project with the goals of the business through the demonstration of strong, pragmatic business acumen and the ability to recognize the business consequences of legal advice. 
  • Strong, logical legal mind with the ability to apply abstract concepts of law to make timely, well-reasoned and appropriate decisions to solve problems.
  • Strong advocacy skills.
  • Ability to function autonomously, yet understands necessity of advising management of work progress and any unusual situations.

Min. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree (technical degree, especially Chemical Engineering or Chemistry is helpful and preferred, but not required).
  • U.S. qualified lawyer (J.D.) with admission before a state bar. 
  • Professional qualification to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office helpful and preferred, but not required. 
  • A minimum of 4 years active legal practice, including experience negotiating contracts.
