Basic Function

As a Sustainability Communication Advisor, this individual will be a member of the Corporate Communications team, and will be responsible for providing strategic, Corporate Communications support to the Net Zero Transition (NZT) team, who is responsible for leading the company’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategy. This will include developing and executing external communication strategies in support of the NZT team’s business objectives and developing content to educate, motivate and inspire employees through Communications.

 

Together with other Sustainability & Corporate Affairs and Circular & Low Carbon Solutions business colleagues, this individual will help execute the integrated, nonmarket strategy to establish LYB as a leader in taking climate action. This includes developing a deep understanding of the key issues impacting the company’s net zero transition, developing communication strategies in support of the company’s actions towards those issues, and executing supporting communications tactics and plans.

 

It is imperative that the Sustainability Communication Advisor possess an outside-in perspective and strategic, sustainability focused mindset, has strong writing and presentation skills, is comfortable operating in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, has an upbeat and professional attitude, can manage multiple tasks simultaneously, can effectively collaborate with multiple stakeholders and is comfortable communicating across all levels of the organization.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Act as a strategic partner for multiple clients, providing communications guidance and support with assigned clients and/or external stakeholders on complex topics.
  • Develop and execute external communication plans and help create content for internal communications.
  • Partner with the Sustainability & Corporate Affairs (S&CA) team in both content and visual storytelling for LyondellBasell through a broad array of communication assets
  • Craft key messages, messages houses and presentations to support NZT and enable key spokespeople across the company to speak in one voice. 
  • Serve as a project owner, executing campaigns and projects with a high degree of skill and professionalism.
  • Take initiative to think several steps ahead and anticipate the needs of clients / stakeholders and management.
  • Communicate proactively with S&CA and business colleagues on upcoming communications to ensure awareness and alignment among all stakeholders.
  • Represent the company with the utmost integrity and abide by the LyondellBasell Code of Conduct
  • Review and edit documents and language from other functional areas where applicable (e.g., external, marketing communications, internal) for accuracy and consistency.
  • Present purposeful and relevant ideas for how to reach key stakeholders through new communication channels that will elevate LYB’s reputation on climate action.
  • Implement metrics systems and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to benchmark team progress and success of communications initiatives and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Partner with in-house design team to execute creative concepts in alignment with overarching corporate messaging and brand standards.
  • Attend and/or lead group and client meetings as needed.

Min. Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in journalism, communications, business, marketing, public relations or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience required, or 5+ years in Communications or Sustainability
  • Experience working for or supporting a global company.
  • Experience writing in AP style - writing samples will be required. 
  • Experience in the petrochemical, oil and gas, energy sector, or sustainability field preferred
  • Basic understanding of the impacts of climate change, and willingness to develop technical knowledge of greenhouse gas emissions reduction technologies and processes.
  • Ability to think strategically, adapt to a rapidly changing environment, and improve efficiency.
  • Possession of an outside-in perspective and sustainability-focused mindset is required.
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, both oral and written 
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work independently, be detail-oriented and set priorities to meet deadlines for complex projects.
  • The ideal candidate will have excellent collaboration and listening skills and the ability to impact and influence across multiple stakeholder groups and interact effectively at all levels of the organization.
