Assistant Tax Planning Manager

Basic Function

The Assistant Tax Planning Manager will be responsible for preparing tax technical and economic analyses of tax planning and restructuring options, proposed tax legislative changes, and tax audit related matters relative to LyondellBasell operations.  The primary focus is expected to be US federal with some state tax technical issues and an opportunity to develop US international and cross-border tax technical knowledge. This role will be integral to the Tax Planning and Counsel Team, communicating results of analytics and recommendations on a risk-assessed basis.  This position reports to the Associate Director, Global Tax Planning.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze tax planning options for US group and foreign subsidiaries, coordinating with non-US tax colleagues and external advisors where needed.
  • Create and maintain dynamic models to analyze tax impact of various scenarios including legislative changes, restructuring transactions, and tax return elections. 
  • Research and analyze proposed tax legislative changes in support of tax advocacy matters and identifying planning and risk mitigation actions.
  • Draft technical memos to communicate impact of legislative and regulatory changes and transactional activity to US compliance and global tax reporting teams.
  • Provide support assisting tax counsel in M&A activities including diligence, structuring, and risk assessment.
  • Assist tax counsel in partnering with business groups to support operational tax related matters and identify tax opportunities.
  • Provide support for US income tax audits, including preparing responses in collaboration with tax compliance team.
  • Support tax accounting function including documenting FIN 48 positions and impact of US tax legislative changes.
  • Support US international income tax compliance function including preparation or review of calculations (e.g. Subpart F, GILTI, FDII, BEAT, etc.).
  • Identify and drive process improvements and efficiencies for areas of responsibility.

Min. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum of six (6) years related experience with a combination of public accounting and/or public company experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of US federal income tax concepts.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting legislative and regulatory changes to tax provisions.
  • Solid understanding of tax accounting concepts including FIN 48 and effective tax rate analysis.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work cohesively as a cross-functional team member.
  • Proven ability to work independently, think critically, and make decisions exercising sound business judgement.
  • Proficient in tax research and writing skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (tax or finance) and / or JD (with emphasis on taxation) preferred.
  • CPA preferred, but not required.
  • Working knowledge of US international tax concepts including Subpart F, GILTI, FDII, BEAT, preferred, not required.
  • SAP experience a plus.
