This is a working supervisor position that serves a key role in managing La Porte’s Safety and Health programs and directly supervises a group of safety and health specialists.  This position is responsible for driving compliance with applicable safety & health regulations and standards and will interact with a diverse group of customers including plant management, operations, maintenance, process and project engineering, corporate HSE and various outside regulatory agencies.  The successful candidate for this position will continually develop as an occupational safety and health subject matter expert for the site and will proactively take ownership and influence decisions for the development and continued improvement of site safety and health programs and processes.

A Day in the Life

  • Provide direct supervision to a group of Safety and Health Specialists to include establishing goals, mentoring, development, accountability, and ongoing performance management/feedback.
  • Develops, improves, and implements safety procedures and supports H&S programs including training.
  • Serves as a safety and health subject matter expert for plant management, internal customers, and fellow HSE team members.
  • Research and interpret new and current regulatory and company requirements to make recommendations on policies and procedures as required.
  • Develops and performs safety and health assessments and training to ensure regulatory compliance and to sustain injury and incident reduction.
  • Provides safety and health consultation to capital and plant small project efforts from project conception through execution phases.
  • Serves as a consultant and coach for field operations, labs, and maintenance functions during routine and non-routine operations which will include maintenance activities and turnarounds.
  • Assists the organization as well as contractors in the development of safe methods for performing non-routine work.
  • Participates in and supports incident investigations as necessary.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of assigned area safety and health programs and program improvements and works with management to implement recommendations.
  • Mentors and coaches less experienced personnel within the La Porte Health, Safety and Loss Prevention/Emergency Services Groups.
  • Participates in various corporate initiatives as identified and assigned.
  • Support / participate in emergency response activities.
  • Fulfill other related responsibilities as assigned.

You Bring This Value

  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Safety, IH, Fire Protection, or similarly related discipline.
  • A minimum of 8 years working in a petrochemical (or similar industry) environment with at least 5 years’ direct experience in Health and Safety.
  • Professional certification (ASP / CSP) is highly desired.
  • Working to expert knowledge of OSHA 1904, 1910, and 1926 regulations. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing with multiple levels of internal and external clients.
  • Demonstrated time management and multi-tasking skills to handle changing priorities and work with defined timelines.
  • Willingness to delegate tasks that can be performed by support staff or less-seasoned personnel.
  • The person in this position will be expected to work independently with a level of oversight/supervision commensurate with experience level. 
  • The person in this position will be expected to continually develop professionally and provide guidance and mentoring to direct reports and those with less Safety and Health experience.
