The Unit Inspector manages the stationary equipment inspection program for the unit or area to which they are assigned. This includes inspecting stationary equipment such as piping, pressure vessels, storage tanks, and fired heater equipment according to industry standards and best practices (API 570, 510, 653) in order to maintain mechanical integrity, comply with OSHA CRF 1910.119j and company standards. The Inspector also develops unit inspection plans working with Meridium and RBI software, and ensures timely execution of those plans. The Inspector is responsible for setting expectations and coordinating outside inspection services resources, as well as contributing to the special reliability programs such as Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI), Above Ground Storage Tanks Inspections (AST), RBI, and others.

A Day in the Life

  • Ensures all fixed equipment Mechanical Integrity activities meet corporate, local, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develops inspection plans, coordinates inspections, evaluates inspection results, develops run/repair/replace recommendations, tracks inspection findings/recommendations to closure and keeps RBI evergreen.
  • Utilizes inspection management systems (Meridium, RAT, RBI, RvlFT) effectively.
  • Continuously optimizes inspection plans to reduce inspection and maintenance cost.
  • Ensures efficient use of contract resources to complete equipment/piping inspections and reviews inspection reports for accuracy.
  • Develop Inspection Test Plans (ITP) and perform QA surveillance of stationary equipment repair work as well as new fabrication to ensure compliance with the requirements.
  • Interprets film for QA of RT inspection on existing equipment repairs as well as new construction fabrication.
  • Creates, reviews and/or approves repair plans to correct non-conformances.
  • Reviews welding procedures, procedure qualifications, and welder qualifications.
  • Interfaces with and support maintenance/reliability/engineers, operations, and other unit inspectors regarding concerns or deficiencies found on equipment.
  • Coordinates periodic dialogues and provides guidance to operations, PMCs, planning, and maintenance to ensure continued reliable operation.
  • Acts as an effective point of contact for interactions with other workgroups on inspection activities in their assigned areas.
  • Performs as the mechanical integrity lead for outages and turnarounds developing stationary equipment inspection and repair scopes.
  • Reviews and is knowledgeable with Global Asset Integrity Standard (GAIS) for Fixed Equipment, corporate inspection and maintenance procedures, site specific procedures and standards, and ASME codes.
  • Supports all applicable incident investigations and Root Cause Failure Analyses.
  • Proactively participates in the development and testing of new tools and applications in the inspection area.
  • Proactively monitors technological developments in the NDE field and conducts tests to determine field of application.
  • Ensures all potential overdue inspection deferral forms are composed, submitted, and approved before the due date.
  • Assure Operational Excellence and HSE concerns and/or events are escalated and investigated appropriately in a timely manner.
  • Adhere and support OSHA/Site Management of Change (MOC) process.
  • Ensure all stationary equipment is safe and reliable to operate.
  • Act as a leader in safety with the ability to stop any and all unsafe work.
  • Advocate that applicable industry and company standards are followed by everyone in LYB.

You Bring This Value

  • A High School Diploma or equivalency is required; College level courses desired.
  • Typically, eight (8) years' experience in mechanical integrity inspection-related activities in refining, petrochemical, or chemical process industries
  • Ability to utilize the following computer software: SAP, Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Familiarity with Risk-Based Inspection programs as well as typical software tools to implement them
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required
  • The ideal candidate would have the following certifications: 
    • Three (3) API or AWS {API 570, 510, 653 and AWS - CWI} certifications
    • Level II Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) certifiable hours and training
    • API 580
    • NACE CIP Level 1
  • Working knowledge of the following codes and standards:
    • NBIC, ASME Section VIII Div. 1, ASME Section V, ANSI 8.16.5, ANSI 8.31.3, and ANSI 8.31.1
      Have knowledge of:
    • Stationary equipment failure mechanisms (corrosion, erosion, chloride stress corrosion cracking, fretting, etc.), maintenance and repair
    • Pressure relief device operation, failure mechanisms, and NBIC code requirements
    • Computer programs: Meridium, API/RBI
