Basic Function

LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB) is one of the world’s largest plastics, chemical and refining companies and a member of the S&P 500, is seeking a Scientist to join our R&D Analytical team at the Cincinnati Technology Center (CTC) located in the Cincinnati, OH area.  As a member of the team you will support the R&D Analytical Laboratory business needs.  This position reports to the Analytical Lab Manager of the Cincinnati Technology Center.  Position offers a competitive base salary, bonus, pension plan, 401K matching, generous benefits package, education assistance, employee discounts and relocation to Cincinnati.

Job Description

  • This position will utilize a variety of Analytical testing techniques (NMR, FTIR, Raman, DSC, TGA, ICP-MS, XRD, and XRF) to solve problems related to fundamental polymer research, polymer characterization, and technical support for our manufacturing organization.
  • Plan, design and execute method development and implementation programs to reach business objectives.
  • Serve as technical resource, maintain high-standards, positive attitude, good work ethics and train lab associates.
  • Participate in internal Expert Groups to leverage best practices, keep up-to-date with advances in the field of polymer research, and introduce new analytical technologies, including new instrument evaluations and recommendations.
  • Serve on multidisciplinary teams supporting research efforts by solving complex problems.
  • Ensure safe and efficient laboratory operations, overseeing the necessary calibrations, maintenance of the laboratory equipment, safe handling of all chemicals  and assisting with testing as needed.
  • Ensure alignment of analytical testing, communication with management and customers while understanding priorities with business requirements

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Utilize analytical knowledge to solve problems specifically in the area of polymer characterizations
  • Provide technical leadership in two or more areas such as NMR, FTIR, Raman, DSC, TGA, ICP-MS, XRD, and XRF analysis applied to polymers
  • Utilize different types of Analytical techniques as needed to analyze samples submitted to the lab and consistently deliver high quality reliable results while meeting customer expectations and throughput goals
  • Responsible for receiving, preparing, testing, interpreting data, reporting statistics, entering and/or uploading to the LIMS
  • Develop new methods as necessary in support of projects
  • Conduct analytical testing associated with assigned projects
  • Maintain all instruments in good working condition, including required routine calibration

  • Interface effectively with R&D managers, supervisors, researchers, other technicians, engineers, site HSE and other support staff for the planning and execution of efficient experimental programs with the highest attention to detail and data integrity

  • Exhibit excellent safety leadership in the workplace, consistent with company and site HSE goals.

Min. Qualifications

Education:

  • PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Engineering, Sustainability, Chemical engineering, Environmental, Bioanalytical, Physics, Material Science or a related technical discipline.

Work Experience:

  • A strong background in two or more areas such as NMR, FTIR, Raman, DSC, TGA, ICP-MS, XRD, and XRF with at least 1-5 years industrial/academic experience related to polymers
  • Background in sustainability or statistics would be beneficial.
