Basic Function
LyondellBasell (NYSE: LYB) is one of the world’s largest plastics, chemical and refining companies and a member of the S&P 500, is seeking a Scientist to join our R&D Analytical team at the Cincinnati Technology Center (CTC) located in the Cincinnati, OH area.  As a member of the team you will support the R&D Analytical Laboratory business needs with emphasis in Sustainability.  This position reports to the Analytical Lab Manager of the Cincinnati Technology Center.  Position offers a competitive base salary, bonus, pension plan, 401K matching, generous benefits package, education assistance, employee discounts and relocation to Cincinnati.

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mass Spectrometry Scientist will use multiple state of the art mass spectrometers such as GC/MS triple quad, LC/MS QTOF and LC/MS ion trap to develop methods, solve problems and create solutions related to fundamental polymer research, polymer characterization, sustainability initiatives and technical support for internal R&D, customers and manufacturing plants.  Experience in a variety of chromatographic techniques such as headspace GC techniques esp. for odor analysis, HPLC with UV, ELSC and CAD detectors is necessary.  Other Analytical testing techniques (NMR, FTIR, Raman, DSC, TGA, ICP-MS, XRD and XRF) may also be used.
•    Serve as technical resource, maintain high-standards, positive attitude, good work ethics and train lab associates.
•    Participate in internal Expert Groups to leverage best practices in Analytical Chemistry with colleagues in our international technical centers.  Keep up-to-date with advances in the field of polymer research and mass spectrometry. Introduce new analytical technologies, including new instrument evaluations and recommendations.
•    Serve on multidisciplinary teams supporting research efforts by solving complex problems.
•    Ensure safe and efficient laboratory operations, overseeing the necessary calibrations, maintenance of the laboratory equipment, safe handling of all chemicals.
•    Provide technical leadership and hands on expertise in GC/MS, especially headspace analyses and LC/MS of polymer related small molecules such as polymer additives and odor compounds.
•    Interface effectively with R&D managers, supervisors, researchers, other technicians, engineers, site HSE and other support staff for the planning and execution of efficient experimental programs with the highest attention to detail and data integrity. Ensure alignment of analytical testing by understanding business priorities and requirements. 
•    Focus on contributing a positive attitude, promoting positive work environment and high degree of teamwork
•    Exhibit excellent safety leadership in the workplace, consistent with company and site HSE goals.

Min. Qualifications

Education:
•    PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Engineering, Sustainability, Chemical engineering, Environmental, Bioanalytical, Physics, Material Science or a related technical discipline.
Work Experience:
•    A strong, in-depth background GC/MS and LC/MS with at least 0-3 years industrial/academic experience related to polymers.
•    Background in sustainability or statistics would be beneficial. 
•    Experience in broad range of analytical techniques is desirable
•    Demonstrated documentation and research skills
•    Highly self-motivated individual, focused on providing high quality laboratory data in an efficient manner, while exhibiting excellent workplace skills
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•    Problem solving skills and the ability to make competent, independent, decisions in a timely manner to ensure excellent progress on projects and assigned tasks
•    Ability to effectively manage multiple and or changing priorities with minimal supervision
•    Must possess the ability to interact effectively and professionally with internal customers, external customers and vendors. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, supervisors and other employees.
