Basic Function

LyondellBasell is staffing for a Laboratory Specialist for the Channelview, TX Manufacturing Complex, located 18 miles from downtown Houston. Our 4,000-acre Channelview Complex consists of two olefin units at the north side facility that manufacture ethylene, propylene, butadiene and benzene. The south side facility uses many of these products to produce propylene oxide, styrene monomer and other derivatives. The Laboratory Specialist is expected to function as a Subject Matter Expert in the maintenance and care of laboratory equipment, including physical properties of site materials, chromatography, environmental compliance programs, and a steward of LIMS.

Roles & Responsibilities

•    Accountable for personal safety, the safety of co-workers and promoting a GoalZero work environment.
•    Responsible for carrying out all work activities in compliance with federal and state regulations.
•    Promote an environment in which everyone is treated with respect.  
•    Understand targets on intermediate streams, product specifications on finished products, compliance samples and specific testing requirements for each.
•    Provide technical assistance on environmental issues related to permit; compliance, regulations, or departmental policies
•    Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of SAP, LIMS systems, Chromatography and other laboratory software applications. 
•    Assist the Chemists in implementation of new technologies, including installation and initial calibration of new test equipment
•    Available for call-outs and to occasionally work after hours including nights and weekends
•    Troubleshoot laboratory issues, ensure the calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment. 
•    Train Technicians in the correct calibration procedures. 
•    Ensure documentation is maintained and record management in system.
•    Analyze and certify unit calibration blends for online analyzers. 
•    Performs minor building maintenance, understands and writes permits related to the Lab.
•    Assist in ordering laboratory supplies and maintain inventory.

Min. Qualifications

•    Associates Degree in applicable craft with a minimum of 1-4 years of experience or 3-6 years of related experience in a refining, petrochemical, chemical environment or related industry.
•    Comprehensive knowledge of Gas Chromatography (GC). Hands on experience of GC valve configuration, (6 port, 8 port etc), Column installation, troubleshooting of Inlet and detectors etc.
•    Demonstrated analytical skills to effectively evaluate and troubleshoot equipment performance.
•    Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and maintenance of petrochemical analytical instruments such as GC, LC, Distillation, Titration, Karl fisher, Sulfur analyzers.

•    Dedicated to safe work processes including strong support for site safety practices.
•    Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop a team environment.
•    Ability to interact with FLSs, Unit Specialists, Technicians, Operations and Technical Staff.
•    Thorough knowledge of the Laboratory Work Process and its relevance to the business. 
•    Experience troubleshooting and maintaining equipment
