Basic Function

The Sr. Technology Manager, Low Carbon Olefin Production is responsible for the development and oversight of the LyondellBasell global technology strategy in the area of low carbon emitting olefin production processes, including (but not limited to) technologies to move to alternative sustainable technologies for the cracking furnace, olefin separations and technologies to convert olefin by-product fuels to chemicals. This may include leadership of specific projects and activities as well as coordination of projects led elsewhere in the organization. 
 

The Sr. Technology Manager will be responsible for developing a portfolio of activities and (pre-stage gate) projects in the specified area, coordinating activities across different readiness levels in the portfolio, while communicating effectively with the relevant stakeholders, driving for engagement, alignment and continuous progress through the appropriate decision-making process. Activities will include performing landscape analyses of the technology area including technology qualifications, competitive positioning, economics, benefits and cost performance. Both commercial as well as developing technologies shall be included in the analysis.

 

This position will collaborate actively with internal stakeholders throughout the various functions (e.g., R&D, IP, legal, subsidies, sustainability) and businesses (O&P, Net Zero, C&LC teams) and will make sure that handover of activities for implementation is seamless. 

 

This position will interface externally with relevant Universities, Industry Consortia, early-stage companies and start-ups, established Technology Providers, Venture Capital and Funds, Consultants, Government Regulators, Industry Associations and other potential partners along the value chain, positioning LyondellBasell as a credible partner for collaboration.

 

They will be the technology focal point for all topics related low carbon emitting olefin production, gaining an understanding of different technologies as they relate to different products. They will liaise and contribute on technology matters to the site Net Zero roadmap initiatives and the Business Units’ objectives.

 

They must have strong skills in the areas of strategic vision and thinking, portfolio management, scenario thinking, technology and economics assessment, collaboration (multi-functional and cross-geographic), communication and drive for results. 

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Systematically build out a portfolio of activities and projects within the scope of the role.
  • Monitor the evolving technology landscape in the Olefins production / Cracker space.
  • Assess technologies and develop relationship with the main technology providers. 
  • Collaborate in assessment of technology landscape and assess the relevance of the key technologies in future LYB decarbonization roadmaps, including emission gases from the furnace. 
  • Create a process to efficiently identify and evaluate opportunities for partnership, acquisition or venture capital in each area, defining also the appropriate strategy regarding invention (IP) or partnership/acquisition.  
  • Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders and build an effective network.  Key external stakeholders include Technology Providers (including early-stage companies and start-ups), Forum and Consortium, Venture Capital and Funds, Universities, Government regulators, Industry associations, Non-Governmental Alliances, and other potential partners along the value chain.  Key internal stakeholders include global and regional Procurement, O&P, Olefins, Olefins Process Engineering and I&D business management, R&D, manufacturing, SP&T, supply chain, legal, government affairs, corporate communications, and finance. 
  • Consider in technology evaluation opportunities, benefits and risks. Ensure well managed and appropriate balance between risk and reward.  Willing to think broadly in seeking solutions.  
  • Display agility and appropriate sense of urgency in order to operate as quickly and effectively as possible in achieving targets.
  • Represent LYB as appropriate in external forums, alliances, industry associations and with lawmakers.

Min. Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in chemical or mechanical engineering, chemistry, technology and energy management, or other related disciplines.
  • Minimum of 15 years gained in the petrochemical or technology/engineering & construction companies, having developed a proven significant exposure to decarbonization and low carbon technologies. 
  • Demonstrated ability in establishing, developing and implementing strategies. 
  • Experience in developing partnerships and managing relationships. 
  • Demonstrated ability in creating effective networks. 
  • Solid understanding of value drivers in the B2B industrial value chains.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing business cases, evaluating technologies and assessing opportunities.
  • R&D and Technology skills.
