This position manages, directs and executes a safe, reliable, cost effective and environmentally sound laboratory and quality organization. The incumbent manages laboratory/quality performance for two, geographically separated, quality control laboratories at the Channelview Complex, with an emphasis on proactively seeking continuous improvement and utilizing best practices in order to meet or exceed customer expectations. The responsibilities include: 1) managing two quality control labs with four 12-hour rotating shifts; 2) ensuring products meet customer specifications and marketing requirements while maintaining ISO 9001:2015 compliance and Operational Excellence expectations; and 3) defining and implementing world class quality systems and techniques. Ensures alignment with corporate goals, policies, and procedures by communicating clear performance and business expectations and identifying key business drivers. This position reports to the Site Technical Manager of the Channelview Complex.

A Day in the Life

  • This position provides leadership, managerial oversight, and strategic direction for the Lab and Quality personnel supporting the entire Channelview Complex.
  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Set direction for the Channelview Lab and Quality department to achieve documented performance metrics and targeted industry benchmark performance via annual performance goals, appraisal and recognition systems.
  • Provide supervision and leadership for entire Lab and Quality Organization at the Channelview Complex. Group includes Chemists, Laboratory Supervisors, Quality Analysts, Lab Specialists, and Shift Lab Technicians.
  • Demonstrate strong Safety leadership and have group fully participate in site's safety rituals.
  • Defining and implementing world class quality systems and techniques while maintaining ISO 9001:2015 compliance.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive audit plan that seeks to drive continuous improvement across the complex in all quality related processes.
  • Understanding of analytical technology and laboratory instrumentation, unit processes, statistical quality control, ISO quality systems, laboratory computer database systems, and HSE requirements.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of the diverse technologies represented at the Channelview complex which include both Olefins and I&D businesses.
  • Develops & manage a fixed budget for two cost centers with a combined budget of $11.7MM
  • Ensure the department is compliant with all required Operational Excellence and PSM expectations and stays current on all action item assignments from incidents, PHAs, MOCs and Audits.
  • Develops and manages a five-year plan that seeks to continuously improve the lab and to drive implementation of technological advances. Plan should seek to keep facility ahead of equipment obsolescence issues while improving the efficiency of the lab. Incumbent should understand and be able to manage the entire planning, budgeting and execution processes for capital and expense items.
  • Extensive interaction with corporate groups including: Quality; Technical Service; Business (PO and Derivatives; Co-Products; Olefins; Methanol/IPOH; Equistar Pipeline).
  • Assures full compliance with cGMP for associated food grade products.
  • Establish departmental personnel standards and training and development consistent with LYB expectations to attract, retain, grow and advance talent
  • Drive revenue enhancement through all operating areas as related to lab and quality.
  • Ensure proper level of engagement of department members with Technical Knowledge (TKM) and established LYB Technical Networks as well as accredited Industry groups

You Bring This Value

  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in a Manufacturing or Lab Environment.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal, coaching and management skills capable of leading a large and diverse team.

  • Technical understanding of Quality processes
  • IT capability in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Prior supervision or management experience preferred
