The Process Engineer’s role is to provide process technical expertise and innovation to operating units within the Bay City, MI. site. Responsibilities include equipment monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization to drive strong unit performance while maintaining focus on safety and environmental compliance. The Process Engineer will also participate in plant-wide optimization and improvement opportunities and occasionally lead complex multi-unit troubleshooting efforts. Additionally, drive evolving site initiatives to implement new process automation and digital capabilities as part of longer-term operational improvements. #LI-LL2

A Day in the Life

This position will oversee and provide primary input for all process profiles and equipment set ups. Responsibilities include identifying, acquiring, and qualifying process equipment and ensuring that manufacturing processes are properly documented. In addition, participate in problem solving activities and developing intellectual property. This position requires strong communication, organizational and technical skills.

 

  • Own equipment process performance and drive continuous improvement using structured problem-solving (LEAN methodologies) and data-driven decision making to close safety, quality, throughput, and cost gaps.
  • Own process-related reliability performance by identifying chronic losses, eliminating failure modes, and partnering with maintenance and operations to improve equipment uptime and sustain results.
  • Ensure process safety, environmental compliance, and operational integrity through application of standards and rigorous Management of Change (MOC) practices.
  • Define and sustain process control strategies, using data to monitor performance, identify deviations, and drive timely actions to maintain stable and predictable operations.
  • Partner with operations through daily management systems to identify issues, implement solutions, and build operator capability in troubleshooting, process understanding, and adherence to standard work.
  • Advance process automation projects and digital initiatives through collaboration with technical teams, evaluation of new technologies, and application of data tools to improve operational performance.
  • Provide technical leadership and input for capital and non-capital projects across the full lifecycle, including scope development, equipment specification, design review, justification, quoting, installation, commissioning, process validation, and customer qualification.
  • Interact with leading internal / external experts, vendors, and other outside consultants to develop and implement improvements.
  • Assist in developing documents, specs, protocols, SOPs, batch records, work instructions, and test procedures.
  • Work with development partners to assist with polymer processing development effort.
  • Own contractor relationships and communications, managing purchasing, scheduling, permitting, and safety compliance while supporting on-site project execution
  • Leverage ERP data to analyze key performance indicators, identify process improvement opportunities, and support data-driven decision making across operations and supply chain functions.
  • Support long-range planning initiatives ensuring strategic alignment of projects with site goals and prioritizing projects and efforts based on operational risks and improvements.
  • Manage, track, and measure risk and continuous improvement initiatives across the site in compliance with AS9100 requirements and drive operational excellence.

You Bring This Value

  • B.S. Degree in Engineering is preferred
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years prior experience working as a process engineer with preferred relevant experience in the polymers, petrochemical, or chemical process industries
  • Strong background in process control & automation systems (e.g., PLCs)
  • Familiarity with data analysis or process monitoring tools preferred
  • Leadership skills to influence the organization and drive improvement
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to mentor and coach others in all directions of the organization
  • Advanced technical understanding of unit processes and willingness to specialize further technology & expertise, including openness to digital tools and emerging manufacturing technologies
