Basic Function

The EC USCA Product and Application Development (PAD) Manager is responsible for leading the EC USCA Product and Application Development team.  The basic function of the position is to ensure the PAD team is working in a manner promoting goal Zero while leading material technology efforts related to developing new material technology, wining new business awards and achieving reduced costs.  The PAD manager will be helping implement new technologies and solutions by effectively collaborating with our customers, marketing, sales, manufacturing and business leadership.  This position is responsible for guiding and developing the EC USCA PAD team members and will report into the Innovation & Lab Manager.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Lead team to operate in a safe, clean, and productive manner.
  •   Support efforts to enhance the safety of Lyondellbasell operations (for example assist in safe handling and use of raw materials in development and manufacturing, actively participating in HSE team, and actively participating in safety audits…). 
  • Promote and support all aspects of the Lyondellbasell Health, Safety, and Environmental guidelines. 
  • Promote and/or lead in other compliance related efforts as appropriate for the material technology leader (e.g. areas related to ITAR, TOSCA, etc).
  • Lead and guide the PAD team to meet the business goals for new product development and sales, timelines for new product developments and innovation projects, and technical support of new business awards. 
  • Lead team to ensure new products developed will enhance, augment and improve product offerings and lead to the award of new business. 
  • Lead team to identify innovative new material and process technologies which will allow EC to significantly improve product performance or significantly reduce cost.
  •   Provide team and EC business technical guidance on development projects and in other areas as needed. 
  • Lead team to ensure that intellectual property developed is appropriately protected by appropriately leveraging patents and trade secrets.
  • Lead and guide the PAD team to meet the business goals for cost reduction and projects to enhance business continuity. 
  • Lead team to ensure projects will positively impact the business’ cost and surety of continuity. 
  • Lead team to identify innovative new material and process technologies which will allow EC to significantly improve product performance or significantly reduce cost. 
  • Provide team and EC business technical guidance on development projects and in other areas as needed.  Lead team to ensure that intellectual property developed is appropriately protected by appropriately leveraging patents and trade secrets. 
  • Provide material science and chemistry leadership support for all US based engineered composite manufacturing sites. 
  • Manage expense budgets.
  • Work with cross functional team to assess project priorities and optimize resource allocation accordingly. 
  • Guide team to effectively leverage business processes to drive efficiency (e.g. Stage Gate Process, IP process, new material introduction process, …). 
  • Guide team to optimize use of new raw materials for new developments to strike balance of raw material and product portfolio’s. 
  • Identify and help lead rationalization of raw materials and products. 
  • Identify ways for the PAD team and broader EC team to work more efficiently, particularly as it pertains to new product development and innovation. 
  • Effectively communicate up, down and across the organization to ensure impact and efficiency of team efforts.
  • Provide training, experiential opportunities and regular feedback to team members which afford them the best opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  •   Hire and develop new employees to meet the needs of the business today while keeping an eye toward what is needed to maintain a competitive edge in the future. 
  • Set team and individual objectives, develop metrics in harmony with strategic objectives and ensure team members have the tools needed for successful implementation of objectives. 

Min. Qualifications

  • The position requires a minimum of an advanced Degree in Chemistry, Polymer or Material Science, or Engineering.  A PhD is a plus.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in research and development, product formulation, and product development are required.  High technical skill is needed in research and development of thermoset formulations as well as process engineering for implementing new technologies and improving current technologies.
  • 3-5 years of experience in technical business management (technical project management, personnel management, technology implementation) is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • The preferred candidate will have a fundamental knowledge of plastic processing or of plastic test methods and ASTM standards.  Experience in technical specifications within the markets EC serves (automotive, aerospace, oil & gas, building and construction, and energy) is a plus.
