Basic Function

The Global Projects Risk Management (GPRM) function is responsible for the implementation and integration of risk management at all phases throughout capital projects and turnarounds. This includes providing independent risk management support to our Global Projects and Global Turnaround teams which undertake a large portfolio of capital investments to help shape the future growth of the company.

 

You will act as the Project Risk Manager for individual capital projects and turnarounds.

 

In this role, you will be responsible for creating project risk plans, lead the development of projects risk registers, undertake complex qualitative and quantitative analysis and provide facilitation, guidance and training to project teams and/or junior project risk analysts.

 

Using your expertise as a Risk Manager, you will monitor projects and turnarounds so that they comply with the risk management procedures and provide advice to project directors/managers and sponsors by carrying out risk assessments.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Part of your core role will involve working with teams to develop risk registers to make sure the risks are up to date and that appropriate risk responses are in place and are acted upon. Also you will provide regular reports to Project and Turnaround Directors/Managers and give impartial independent assurance that the risk statuses of the projects or turnarounds are monitored efficiently. In addition, other core responsibilities include:

 

  • Facilitate the identification and analysis of risk management on projects and turnarounds throughout the project lifecycle
  • Develop Project Risk Management Execution Plans on projects that are right-sized to project needs and meet existing corporate risk expectations/requirements
  • Manage so that projects and turnarounds have a risk register  to record outputs of the risk process within a database.   Ensures the risk data is accurate, timely and relevant and that appropriate risk responses such as dedicated actions plans are in place and being acted upon within agreed timeframes and escalated if timeframes are missed
  • Carry out qualitative and quantitative assessments to give the best advice to project/turnaround teams on proposed risk-based contingencies
  • Provide regular reports to project directors/managers on the risk status of projects including Risk Management KPIs  and provide advice on the management of contingency  to help provide assurance that the project/turnaround is delivered to meet budget and/or schedule expectations
  • Assists and carry out the development of management reporting  related to changes in the risk profile such as highlighting contingency vs risk exposure on projects
  • Identify trends and interdependencies through reviewing the causes and consequences of different risks  throughout the portfolio.   Facilitate conversations with various functions and disciplines such as project and turnaround management, project controls, procurement, technical engineering disciplines, and other departments to ensure alignment and consistency in the management of risks
  • Can confidently explain the value and benefits of risk management to stakeholders
  • Keeps relevant knowledge up-to-date by attending seminars, training sessions, and workshops, as necessary to develop and ensure success of project risk management principles
  • Is able to independently work multiple projects and turnarounds simultaneously

Min. Qualifications

Experience

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in a professional environment including significant exposure in Project Risk Management
  • Understanding and application of project management, project controls and turnaround processes such as scheduling and planning, estimating, change control etc.
  • Experienced and enjoys risk management facilitation to stakeholders at all levels within the project and turnaround teams
  • Able to build quantitative risk models in a number of applications, which accurately represent the complexities of cost and schedule risk
  • Able to coach and challenge management and non-specialists on the results of risk management
  • Exceptional Interpersonal skills with an ability to drive collaboration among diverse audiences
  • A background in and understanding of the capital project and turnaround environment within a client, consultant, or contractor organization; preferably the Oil and Gas or Chemicals industries

 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering, Construction or other related field required

 

Licenses & Certifications

  • Membership of the Project Management Institute of similar project management profession e.g. PMI-RMP, PMP, IPMA is a plus

Additional

Base Location & Travel

  • The Houston Engineering Center is located at 202 N. Castlegory Rd. Houston, Texas 77049
  • May be required to travel to contractors’ offices or manufacturing sites within Houston and surrounding areas.  May be required to travel outside of surrounding Houston area (<5%)
  • This is a hybrid role, with expectations to be present in the office 2 days per week
